Friday night in front of a packed Dragon Stadium, the Dragon Football team opened up district play with a big victory over cross-town rival, Keller High School. The Dragons would push their overall record to 4-0 with the impressive 56-14 victory.
The Dragon football team welcomed Dragon Youth Football to the game and recognized them in a fun pregame ceremony. The future Dragons got to see their idols put on both an offensive and defensive showcase all night long. Sophomore Quinn Ewers connected on 28 of his 32 pass attempts for 284 yards and five touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns found Senior John Manero. Manero added to his impressive season stats with eight catches for 77 yards to go along with those three touchdowns. The Dragons also had touchdowns from Blake Smith and Wills Meyer through the air.
The ground game produced as well. Junior Cade carried the ball for 80 yards and two touchdowns, and Freshman Owen Allen carried the ball for 90 yards and notched his first varsity touchdown as well.
On defense, the Dragons shut down the Indians in the second half. The defense was led by Seniors Graham Faloona (12 tackles) and Preston Forney (8 tackles). After giving up 14 points in the first half, the defense stepped up and held Keller’s offense in check for the second half. Seniors Josh Sweat and Dylan Thomas both had one interception each that ended drives for the Indians.
The Dragons head out to Denton to take on Denton Guyer on Friday, October 4. Denton Guyer is also undefeated on the season and is ranked fifth, one slot ahead of the Dragons, in the current MaxPrep Texas 6A state rankings. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday.
