Durham Teacher Elizabeth Irish Wins Humanities Award

Durham Intermediate School teacher, Elizabeth Irish, has been recognized with the “Outstanding Teacher of the Humanities Award.”

The Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Awards recognizes exemplary K–12 humanities teachers. Each year, 12 teachers are selected to receive a $5,000 cash award and an additional $1,000 for their respective schools to purchase humanities-based instructional materials.

Humanities Texas is the state-level branch of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Both promote the study of the humanities and provide awesome professional development for history and English teachers. Over the years, Irish has done quite a bit at both the state and national levels.

In 2008, she won a grant from the National Endowment to go to Pearl Harbor and study WWII with a group of teachers from the U.S. and Japan. She has also attended several week-long summer institutes in Texas with Humanities Texas.

Irish will be presented with the award during the fall semester.
