City of Southlake Director of Public Works Rob Cohen presented an update on key construction projects as a part of the City Manager’s Report at the December 7 City Council meeting. Theses updates include ongoing and upcoming capital projects that will be subject to funding in the near future. As of now, the City has a total of 36 active projects. “When we call a project active, we actually determine it to be in one of five different phases whether it’s predesign, design, bid, construction or closeout,” Public Works Director Rob Cohen said. Projects included in the presentation ranged from mobility projects to partnerships, facilities and wastewater. Specifics are as follows: White Chapel Boulevard Widening Project Work on N. White Chapel Boulevard is 70% complete. With the return of the temporary batch plant to resolve the shortage of materials, paving has commenced. Northbound concrete lanes are being placed as of December 14. The project is expected to be completed by May 2022, weather permitting. White Chapel Boulevard and the Crossing at Kirkwood Branch The scope of the project is to raise the elevation of the roadway and construct a pedestrian pathway on the westside. Construction is contingent upon when funding is made available. The initial plan for construction to start is in 2023. This project is in partnership with Denton County. Tarrant County Bond Projects Tarrant County is in partnership with the City of Southlake on two bond projects. The first one includes intersection improvements along Davis Boulevard and W. Continental Boulevard and Union Church Road. This project is anticipated to start in late 2022 is contingent upon when funding is made available. The initial plan is for construction to start in 2022. The second set of intersection improvements will include Continental Boulevard and S. Peytonville Avenue. This project is currently in the design phase. Wastewater The City also plans to survey other manholes to prevent further damage. Repair schedule is to be developed once the full repair effort has been identified. Facilities There are three facilities included in this plan: the Municipal Service Center, the Bob Jones Nature Center barn and the Bicentennial Park Pickleball Complex. City Council approved the contract for design services for the Municipal Service Center at the December 7 City Council meeting. Construction is set to start in late 2022 or early 2023. Work on the barn at Bob Jones Nature Center has already commenced. The barn raising took place at earlier this month. Construction is anticipated to start in August or September 2022 with plans to open the barn in December 2022. The Bicentennial Park Pickleball Complex is currently under design with construction starting in July 2022 with an anticipated opening in December 2022. Pedestrian Pathways The sidewalk on SH 114 will be complete by the end of this year. Plans for a sidewalk section are also in the works for S. White Chapel Boulevard and Pleasant Run Road. Other assessments which are included in the Mobility Master Plan (LINK to approved amendments story when approved) will also take place in the near future. The sanitary sewer system is facing some degradation due to drainage issues which is causing some environmental factors such as exposed infrastructure. The City is currently working on finalizing design alternatives to help address these issues with an engineering consultant.
