It's important to remember that the Texas heat can pose serious safety risks, and the Protect Southlake Team wants you to enjoy every minute of our Independence Day celebration. If you plan to attend the Southlake Stars and Stripes event on Monday, July 3, 2023, you can do a few things to keep yourself safe and comfortable. PEOPLE SAFETY Stay Hydrated - The most essential rule is being hydrated; having water with you will make a difference. Even if you aren't thirsty, you should continue to drink water to stay hydrated. Prepare the day before by adequately hydrating and continue to drink water throughout the event. Find Some Shade - It may not seem like much, but taking a few minutes in the shade can relieve you on a hot day. This year we will have a cooling station on Grand Avenue in front of Starbucks that will provide shade and a cool mist. Also, wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing to reduce heat absorption and stay cooler. Take A Break - Take frequent breaks to hydrate, reapply sunscreen, and relax. When in Doubt, Seek Medical Attention - One important thing to know is that Southlake Stars and Stripes has emergency medical services on site. The first aid tent is on the corner of Fountain Place and Grand Avenue. There is also a second first aid tent located in Cornish Park. DOG SAFETY Home Sweet Home - While people love a good fireworks show, our furry friends do not always enjoy them. With crowds of people and unfamiliar noises, it's easy for dogs to get spooked and run off. Many dogs are afraid of the loud noises and bright lights when it comes to fireworks. If your dog is particularly anxious or has not experienced a fireworks show before, consider leaving them at home so they can feel safe and secure. Bring a Leash - Though pets are highly discouraged, if you bring them along, the Protect Southlake Team encourages you to ensure they are correctly secured in a harness. If the temperature is 85 degrees or over without the chance for the pavement to cool down, the ground may be too hot for safely walking a dog. Hot pavement and warm weather can also increase the overall body temperature of your pet and lead to heat stroke. These simple tips can help ensure a safe and enjoyable fireworks experience for you and your furry friend. Stay cool, stay safe, and have fun!
