When it comes to premier park facilities, there’s no doubt that Bicentennial Park comes to mind.
Located in the heart of Southlake, Bicentennial Park has something for everyone, from playgrounds to enclosed tennis courts, to sidewalks, a trail system, and even a recreation facility.
Although the park is filled with an assortment of recreational resources for everyone to enjoy, the true magic happens at the Texas Rangers Miracle Field.
Founded in 2013, the Texas Rangers Miracle Field was designed for people with special needs.
All playing areas are designed to eliminate barriers for wheelchair-bound and visually impaired players.
As an alternative to dirt, the field is made with synthetic field turf for durability, safety, and performance.
“Our commitment to Southlake is to improve the lives of people visiting and living within the City,” Director of Community Services, Chris Tribble said, “Now adults and youth with special needs can enjoy a day at the park and a good game of baseball.”
With March being National Disability Awareness Month, assets like the Texas Rangers Miracle Field are what help enrich the lives of those living with disabilities and families who care for those with disabilities.
The Texas Rangers Miracle Field project is greatly supported by the City of Southlake’s partners the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation and the Miracle League of Southlake Organization.
“Our partnership with the City has been great!” said Tom Kormondy, director of operations with the Miracle League of Southlake. “Being a 501(c)3, the City has waived our usage fees for the field and the Parks and Recreation employees have gone out of their way to help us provide a quality environment for our “Special” participants, maintaining our field and the surrounding area which creates a safe environment for both the players and their families.”
“Our organization as well as their parents, have noticed a marked improvement in motor, social, and athletic skills in many of our players, since participating in our program. We have seen returning players acting more social from season to season, and improvements in their baseball skills,” Kormondy said.
