The DFW airport will close Runway 17R/35L starting Aug. 15 as part of Phase 2 of their runway rehabilitation project. Though there may be some noise increase during Phase 2, a noise model required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) indicated no significant noise impacts are expected in the City of Southlake. Runway 17R/35L, which typically handles about 50% of DFW’s daily departures, will undergo a complete cosmetic reconstruction to alleviate significant wear and tear accumulated over its 49-year lifespan. The full closure of 17R/35L requires more flights to arrive and depart from different runways like the diagonal 13R/31L runway on the east side of the airport, meaning you might notice different traffic in the sky than usual during the duration of this project. However, airport representatives say the project is not expected to have as much impact as previous runway closures. If you are curious how this construction impacts flight patterns and noise data specifically in your location, you can utilize DFW’s flight tracking system. You can access the airport’s “noise lab” and view overhead flights in real time by inputting your address. Though takeoff and landing locations will depend on the North and South flow of the wind, DFW believes patterns are expected to remain consistent during the project’s duration. The full closure of Runway 17R/35L is set to finish in the early summer of 2024, and the complete Runway Rehabilitation Project will conclude in the fall of 2024.
