There’s no doubt that Southlake has certainly had its share of rain over the last few weeks.

When heavy rains take place on a consistent basis, it may cause drainage issues on your property.

If your drainage system is clogged due to inadequate maintenance, water cannot be properly directed away from your home.

Since state law prohibits cities from making improvements on private land, homeowners are responsible for rainwater that collects on their property.

Here are a few things you can do to prevent drainage issues:

  • Promptly remove litter and debris so that it does not enter drainage collection systems.
  • Avoid raking, blowing or dumping leaves or grass clippings into the stormwater system.
  • Keep drainage systems easily accessible during property repairs.
  • Do not obstruct drainage systems or pathways with privacy fencing or landscaping.
  • Move structures and sheds away from drainage structures or easements so they do not impede drainage flow.
  • Note any erosion and remove foreign objects from around your stormwater pond monthly. Have a professional engineer inspect your stormwater pond every one to two years.
  • Consider converting turf grass around your pond to a native plant buffer zone. Work with a landscape contractor to incorporate native plants to stabilize shorelines and deter geese.
  • Do not exceed recommended application or dosage for fertilizers or pesticides. Excessive saturation of fertilizers will cause run-off and can cause damage to reservoirs, creeks and streams.
