Martha has been a resident of Southlake for nearly 30 years, but her early life was spent in the Southeast. She was born on February 13, 1915 in Humboldt, Tennessee but was raised in Columbus, Mississippi where she attended high school. She also attended college for two years and took Business courses. Martha's main occupation was as a stenographer--someone who transcribes speech into written words, often through the use of shorthand. In 1938, Martha was married to Joseph L. Wood. They lived in Greenville, Mississippi where they later had an adopted daughter, Julie Ann. Joseph passed away in 1978, and Julie Ann lived until 2003. She had a sister named Clarissa, and her grandson John lives in Farmington, Arkansas. Martha moved to Southlake in July of 1993 where she still lives today in a little house on her nephew’s property. Martha loves playing the piano, reading, and cooking. Until the last two years, Ms. Martha had been part of the Southlake Senior Activity Center’s Party Bridge group for many years. She likes Italian food and loves sweets, especially Chocolate and considers herself a “chocoholic.” Martha has a positive attitude and her philosophy of life is that she tries to live with unselfish love and care for others. The Southlake Senior Activity Center would like to wish a very Happy 105th Birthday to Miss Martha (Watson) Wood!
