Dragon Alum Highlights Community Deeds In San Marcos

(Texas State University- San Marcos, San Marcos, TX)- Beginning September 13, 2011, Texas State University student and member of the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team, Aaron Perkins (pictured left), alternated between visiting Crockett Elementary School and Mendez Elementary School every Monday and Friday from September 13 until November 11 to teach Ms. Butler’s gifted-talented fourth grade classes about business principles and entrepreneurship. Aaron Perkins graduated from Southlake Carroll High School in 2008 and has effectively reached out to the local area surrounding Texas State University.

The project, entitled Free Enterprise Education Development (F.E.E.D.), taught the fourth grade students about free market economic concepts such as loans, interest, and finances. Specific finance lessons dealt with creating financial records in order to build on common entrepreneurship practices and business principles. Other lessons focused on how a business is initiated and how sales are used to contribute to expenses and dividends. Following the Monday lesson, the elementary students worked alongside SIFE students to run a school store during lunch on Friday. This outreach project encouraged creativity, free enterprise, and fundamental knowledge for the children’s future. At the end of the semester, these lessons are culminated in a Free Enterprise Extravaganza where all the participating F.E.E.D schools participate in a day long Free Enterprise City. This helps further drive the free market economic concepts for the talented, young students.
