Denton County Health Department Offers Heartsaver CPR and AED Classes

The Denton County Health Department (DCHD) will offer monthly American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR and AED classes for the public starting in July. Participants will learn the most recent, research-proven CPR and AED techniques for adults and children, and CPR for infants.

With nearly 80 percent of sudden cardiac arrests occurring outside the hospital, it is important that residents receive updated CPR and AED training. Contrary to what we see in Hollywood movies, a heart attack is not always sudden and dramatic, with the victim clutching his or her chest and falling to the floor. Actually, a heart attack may start as mild discomfort in the chest, and the pain may come and go. A person experiencing a heart attack may not know what is wrong. Even those who have had previous heart attacks may not recognize the signs, as symptoms may be different from before.  If you witness someone in cardiac arrest or come across an unresponsive person, quick action can save their life.

The Heartsaver CPR and AED classes will take place on the third Wednesday of every month, starting July 17, 2013, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. To offset the cost of materials from the American Heart Association, DCHD will charge $4 per person (cash only).  Space is limited, and participants must register in order to attend. Upon successful completion of the course, including a skills test, students will receive a certification card valid for 2 years. To register, contact Julie Wright at (972) 434-4715 or julie.wright@dentoncounty.com.
