Volunteers Recognized at the Annual CARS Appreciation Dinner

Call a Ride Southlake Event

Mayor John Terrell, Joanne Terrell, Josie Ramos & Julie Dennis

On Thursday, April 17th Call A Ride of Southlake honored their roster of volunteer drivers at the fifth annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.  The event recognized the efforts of the 2013 volunteers, who drove more than 2,000 trips and almost 13,000 miles in support of Southlake seniors and disabled adults.  CARS’ volunteers enable clients to get to medical appointments, go shopping, or attend activities at area Senior Activity Centers.  This year’s event was held at Timarron Country Club and was sponsored by Frost Bank.  Mimi Tran of Frost Bank said, “This event has been a great opportunity to let the public know about CARS and their appreciation for their volunteers but also to reach out to others who may be interested in becoming volunteer drivers.”

Call A Ride of Southlake (CARS) was formed in 2000 to provide seniors and disabled adults with non-emergency rides, enabling them to maintain a level of independence that they gave up when they stopped driving.  Several City and County elected officials were on hand to highlight the volunteers’ efforts in support of area seniors and disabled adults.  Mayor John Terrell and County Commissioner Gary Fickes made special presentations and Councilwomen Carolyn Morris and Pamela Muller were also in attendance.

“As a small nonprofit, we have to make every dollar count,” said Erik Phelps – Executive Director of CARS.  “We depend on the generosity of Southlake merchants to give our deserving volunteers a small gift bag filled with discounts or gift cards to show our appreciation for their service to our clients throughout the year.”  Kirby’s, Truluck’s and Corinthian Wellness Spa provided gifts for the drivers posting the most miles driven and the volunteer driver providing the most trips for the year.  Some of the local merchants supplying gifts included:  Speedy Bee, Kwik Kar, Duff’s, l’Occitaine, Wildwood, Feedstore, and Copeland’s.  Additional donations were made by Southlake Newcomer’s Club, the Greater Southlake Women’s Society, Central Market and Office Depot.

Free Masterworks Concert in Family Park- April 12, 2014

Bone DoggieSouthlake, Texas – Arts Council Northeast and the City of Southlake are pleased to welcome Bone Doggie for a free concert on April 12, 2014. The concert will take place in Family Park, located in Southlake Town Square, from 7:30 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.

A whiskey voice, lightning fingers and a strong love of the nostalgic are the best ways to sum up a Bone Doggie from South Kansas City that plays the Delta Blues on an Irish Bouzouki. A 25-year veteran of countless classic rock, jazz and progressive bands, Bone Doggie has finally settled comfortably into the world of hard core Delta Blues and American Roots Music. “The Delta Blues can ONLY be considered the absolute roots of Rock and Roll, (which is where my roots truly are) and the wealth of material is at the same time humbling and staggering,” he says, “Not to mention the fact that it’s just a hoot to play.” As for the Irish Bouzouki, “Roots again,” says Doggie, “Lots of Irish in this bloodline. Besides, after so many years I wanted to play an instrument that was a bit . . . different than the beaten track. And the bouzouki sounds so old-timey! The thing just rocks.”

Through the MasterWorks Series, Arts Council Northeast and the City of Southlake present free performances on selected evenings throughout the year. The MasterWorks Series is designed to offer a variety of quality family entertainment to the community by utilizing the talent of local, regional, and national artists.
