A Cut Above the Rest: Snip-its Offers Innovative Salon Concept for Kids, Partners with Autism Speaks

From brightly colored surroundings, to interactive sing-along videos, Snip-its is reshaping the traditional hair trimming experience for children. Located at 100 W. Southlake Boulevard, the child-focused salon opened its doors in Southlake April 1, just in time for Autism Awareness Month, which is a cause the company supports throughout the year.

A simple visit to a salon can be overwhelming for children, especially children with sensory issues. The entertainment aspect of Snip-its is specifically designed to engage children, including children with autism, and ease their anxiety about getting a haircut.

Brightly painted walls and whimsical decorative features offer a fun, inviting atmosphere upon entry. During check-in, children receive a Snip-its Adventure Club Card and are welcomed with an interactive sing-along video featuring “Snips and The Gang,” salon-inspired animated characters. When children are seated in the salon chair, the fun continues with custom computer games and activities. Parents even have a special seat next to their child where they can share in the experience. After kids receive their new style, they trade in their Adventure Club card for a special prize at the Snip-its Magic Box.

Snip-its has partnered with the national Autism Speaks organization to implement a unique and one-of-a kind stylist training program specifically for children with autism. All stylists undergo a training webinar to learn about autism, how to work with children who have sensory issues, and learn various methods for easing the stress of getting a haircut.

The Southlake Snip-its location is one of 62 franchise locations across the country, including 13 in Texas, each featuring the same kid-friendly experience. In addition to haircuts, the salon also offers lice prevention services, spa services, and ear piercings.

“We chose Southlake because it is a very family-oriented town and a tight-knit community, which perfectly fits the clientele of Snip-its,” stated Sameena Hasan, who owns the Southlake location with her husband.

CISD Classmates Support Autism Awareness

April is Autism Awareness Month and Mrs. Coopers second grade class at Walnut Grove Elementary School celebrated friends and classmates in a special way. On Tuesday, April 2 students dressed in blue in support of their friend and fellow classmate Carson Stone. Blue is the signature color of Autism Speaks “Light It Up Blue” campaign. April 2, 2013 is the sixth annual United Nations World Autism Day. 

WGES students wore blue headbands and blue beaded necklaces along with stickers that read, “I’m so proud to be… Carson’s friend and classmate”. The stickers also featured the widely recognized Autism ribbon in the middle.  

Classmates cheered for Carson when he came in the room for morning announcements. Carson’s mother, Andi Stone said students and staff are supportive and loving with Carson and do whatever they can to include him in everything they do.
