Orange Barrel Alert – Brumlow Avenue Construction Update

Area of construction for the Brumlow Widening Project

Area of construction for the Brumlow Widening Project

New traffic switches at Brumlow Avenue and State Highway (SH) 26 signal that the Brumlow Avenue Widening Project is entering its final month.

Beginning the week of January 4, 2016 and lasting the rest of the month, periodic traffic switches will occur at Brumlow Avenue, just north of SH 26. Weather permitting, contractors will need to close various lanes of traffic in order to work unobstructed and it’s likely these closures will impact traffic accessing Brumlow Avenue from SH 26.

Motorists are asked to use caution when traveling in the area and please keep in mind that, due to the nature of the work, delays are likely.

Road Construction Brief: Brumlow Avenue Improvements

The City of Southlake, working with Tarrant County, will be making improvements on Brumlow Avenue north of State Highway 26 (SH 26) to just north of Westwood Antiques. These improvements will widen approximately 1,400 linear feet of Brumlow by expanding a segment of the existing road into four divided lanes. In addition to widening the existing street, the project will include relocating City hydrants and water meters as well as various franchise utilities. There will also be approximately 10 trees planted on the west side of the road adjacent to the Argo concrete plant to improve the aesthetics of this portion of the road.

The expansion of this segment of Brumlow is necessary to accommodate proposed changes to traffic patterns into Southlake. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning improvements on SH 26 at Pool Road in Grapevine that will install dual left turn lanes from eastbound SH 26 onto Brumlow Avenue. When the construction is finished, it’s likely that more traffic will be funneled into Southlake. As it stands, the segment of Brumlow near the proposed construction is not wide enough to accept two new through lanes of traffic. These improvements then will provide the necessary transition needed to accommodate the increased flow of traffic into Southlake from SH 26.

TxDOT construction on SH 26 is slated for completion by the end of the year. Working with Tarrant County will allow Southlake to expedite construction on this segment of Brumlow Avenue and ensure the necessary improvements are in place prior to the completion of TxDOT’s SH 26 project.

The widening of this segment of Brumlow is one part of this project. The widening of the remaining portion of Brumlow north to the roundabout at Continental Boulevard is in the City’s 5 year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for a future date as funding becomes available.
