Cross Country Teams Earn Second-Place Finishes at State

ccROUND ROCK – The Carroll Boys & Girls Cross Country teams earned second-place finishes at the Class 6A State Championship last weekend in Round Rock. Despite rain, wind and mud making the already difficult course at Old Settler’s Park even more challenging, both the boys and the girls came away with a podium finish.

“Our boys and girls ran as hard as they possibly could today and came up a little short of our goal,” Carroll coach Justin Leonard said. “Even though we didn’t reach our goal, I’m still proud of the way they competed and their strong finish to the season. Our goal is to work hard and aim high and we will regroup and get ready to come back next season and leave it all on the course again. I would like to thank our seniors for the leadership and dedication to the program over the past four years.”

After earning four consecutive state championships, the Dragon boys came away with second this year, just behind The Woodlands. Junior Reed Brown came in 4th overall, junior Charlie Gardner finished next for the Dragons in 29th place. Nicholas Fernandes was the next scoring Dragon, coming in 31st place followed by Timou Toure grabbing 44th and Shea Whatley taking 58th to finish out the scoring positions. Michael Waugh came in 66th place and Michael Simcho took 78th, completing the varsity team.

The Lady Dragons came in 2nd place just behind Marcus by only 9 points. Their team was led by senior Kayli Jones who took 12th place, followed by Cate Tracht grabbing 25th, Allison Esparza came in 28th, Gillian Mortimer was 30th and Tig Archer was 32nd, finishing out the scoring positions. Sarah Odneal was 45th and Olivia Arriaza came in 60th, to complete the varsity team.

Carroll Cross Country Sweeps 4-5A Meet

The Carroll Dragon cross country teams swept the district championship for the third consecutive year. The top three Carroll varsity teams advances to the Class 5A Region I meet in Lubbock along with the top 10 runners individually.

“We are very proud of the performance and effort that our Dragons displayed by winning all four divisions at the District Meet,” Carroll cross country coach Justin Leonard said. “We need to put this win in our rear view mirror and start focusing on the Regional Meet. We like to say its time to start hauling when the leaves start falling.”

The Lady Dragons top five scoring runners placed in the top 10 and qualifying as a team and individual. Crossing the finish line together in second, third and fourth  – Katie Burnham, Sam Young and Tig Archer (18:55), fifht place was Moriah Dadson and Kayli Jones grabbed seventh place to complete the scoring and top 10 runners. Freshman, Ari Lopez finished with an impressive 12th place (20:02) and senior Haley McFadden 25th place.  The Lady Dragons team scored 21 points.

The Dragon Varsity Boys first place finish was led by seniors Jacob Pickle and Connor Hendrickson. Pickle left the pack with 400 meters to go and had a PR and course record of 15:17, Connor Hendrickson with a close third (15:28), always a strong finisher was Eli Canal in sixth (15:35), Luke Lanham 13th (16:29), Ansel Richards 15th (16:41), Brent Aydon 16th (16:42), and Johnny Kemps 17th (16:45).  The Dragons advance to Regionals with their 1st place finish and team score of 38.

The Region I meet will be held Nov. 2 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. The top three teams and top 10 individuals advance to the state meet Nov. 9.
