Lady Dragon Soccer Advances To Class 5A Final

Lady Dragon freshman Grace Cory provided the game-winning goal in the 1-0 Class 5A state semifinal victory Friday against San Antonio Johnson in Georgetown.

GEORGETOWN – The Carroll Lady Dragons will vye for their second Class 5A state championship Saturday afternoon.

Lady Dragon freshman Grace Cory’s second-half goal was the deciding score in a 1-0 victory against San Antonio Johnson Friday afternoon in a 5A state semifinal at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. Lady Dragon senior Julia Dyche, a Texas signee, delivered the assist.

The Lady Dragons will play in the 5A final for the first time since winning their only state championship in 2008. Plano West enters the game after winning Friday’s state semifinal 4-0 against Katy Taylor. Plano West (27-0-2) is making its seventh state tournament appearance.

Cory scored in the first five minutes of the second half after a scoreless first half. Johnson had a first-half goal wiped away by the official after heavy traffic in front of the goal while Carroll had limited scoring chances. Things opened up for the Lady Dragons’ offense in the second half.

 Carroll improved to 30-2, which extends a record win total for the program. The game will be stream live on FOX Sports Southwest.
