The City of Southlake will honor two local women turning a century old

To say Martha (Watson) Wood of Southlake and Millie Stuck of Colleyville have history would be an understatement. Not history with each other per say, but history in general – to share – with anyone they meet, because together, they have 200 years of memories to delight in.

Martha was born on February 13, 1915 in Humboldt, TN, and later moved to Columbus, MS where she grew up with her sister and spent time as a stenographer. In 1938, she married Joseph L. Wood, and they lived in Greenville, MS with their adopted daughter Julie Ann. [Joseph passed away in 1978 and Julie Ann lived until 2003]. Martha moved to Texas in 1993, where she now lives and enjoys hobbies like playing the piano, reading, cooking, playing bridge at the Southlake Senior Center, and traveling. She has traveled to Great Britain, and loves Italian food and sweets – she considers herself a chocoholic.  Martha’s philosophy on life is that she tries to live a simple, Christian life, with unselfish love and cares for others.

Millie was born on April 8, 1915 in Mills County, TX. She graduated from Goldthwaite, TX high school in 1933 and shortly after married Bill Stuck on June 4, 1939. They moved to Fort Worth in 1944 after a failed crop season on their farm. Both of them went to work during World War II for what is now Lockheed Martin, building the experimental B-36 Peacemaker bomber aircrafts! As the war came to an end, she went to work as a dental assistant where she would spend the next 35 years working at the same dentist office in Fort Worth, TX. Millie celebrated her 80th birthday at Keukenhof Gardens in Holland while on a three week European vacation, and then welcomed her 95th on an Alaskan cruise! She looks forward to renewing her driver’s license on her 100th birthday. Millie, a member of the Red Hat Society, continues to volunteer and attend activities at the Southlake Senior Center and Whites Chapel UMC since moving to Colleyville 11 years ago. She enjoys her two children, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The City of Southlake and Southlake Senior Center will be honoring Martha and Millie on March 27, 2015 with a large birthday celebration at the Southlake Senior Center.  Lunch will be served by Metroport Meals on Wheels (MMOW) and two cakes will be provided and specially decorated by Ruth Robbins at Tastefully Yours Cakes of Southlake.  The City of Southlake will present the ladies with a proclamation and with the help of MMOW, the ladies will also each receive the flags that are flown at the Capital on their birthdays. [Martha’s flag was previously flown when she officially turned 100 on February 13, and Millie’s will be flown on her official birthday – April 8].

Please join the city in congratulating these timeless women on 100 years of growth, prosperity and success!
