The City of Southlake and the Community Services Department emphasize internal movement and staff development. When opportunities become available, we love filling them with our world-class staff.

Tammie Garcia began working for the City in early April as the Senior Recreation Specialist at the Senior Activity Center. In her short time with the Department, she quickly made a great impression by providing world-class service to our senior members. When the Hospitality and Sales Assistant position became available in Legends Hall, we knew Tammie would be the perfect fit.

Let’s get to know her a little bit better.

What drew you to a career in local government?
My daughter, DeLaney, drew me into local government. She has worked for the City of Southlake for four years, and during that time, she suggested job opportunities to me. I decided to apply and was very excited about being offered the position at Legends Hall.

What are you most excited about in your new position?
I am excited about the people I work with and the opportunities for a new challenge. Most of all, I am excited about helping families create memories and milestones every day.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to read and try new restaurants. I enjoy being with my husband and children, and we love to travel!

What’s something every Legends Hall visitor should know?
Anyone walking into Legends Hall should know that our entire team is here to answer any questions regarding the Senior Center, book an event, or give directions!

If you find yourself near Legends Hall,  say hello to Tammie! Congratulations on your new position! We’re so happy to keep you on the team.

October is a beautiful time to host a wedding, and there’s no better place in the DFW metroplex to get married than in Legends Hall at The Marq Southlake.

Legends Hall is a gorgeous state-of-the-art wedding and events venue located in the heart of Southlake. On any given weekend our venue hosts life’s most memorable occasions such as weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations. Booking ahead of time is the key to securing your spot in this beautiful place. If you’ve ever wondered who’s in charge of keeping our venue busy, and profitable, look no further than Sales Specialist Emily Wood.

Let’s get to know her better.

Emily has vast experience in the wedding and event industry. She began her career in 2010 during an internship in the Marketing and Events Department of NYLON Magazine in New York City. She’s worked for multiple wedding planners and restaurants as an Event Coordinator and helped open a wedding and events venue in Fort Worth called BRIK. Emily was at BRIK for two years selling and marketing the venue and working closely with clients on their events. Emily’s career eventually took her to Napa, California, where she worked for Visit Napa Valley, the Marketing and Tourism bureau for the City of Napa. In 2019 she returned to Fort Worth as an Event Coordinator for the ToroToro restaurant in the Worthington Renaissance Hotel. Emily made her way to the City of Southlake as the Sales Specialist for Legends Hall in August 2020.

In her current role, Emily enjoys “making that initial connection with clients. Whether it’s for their Wedding, Birthday Party, Anniversary, or Graduation, they are always so excited to find the right venue and start the planning process. It can be fun to be a part of that journey!”

Working in the events and wedding industry means that Emily keeps tabs on emerging trends. While not so common at Legends Hall, “we are seeing a lot of smaller, more intimate wedding ceremonies and receptions. Couples are really prioritizing who they want present for their special day. They aren't worried about inviting everyone they’ve ever met.”

Emily has a lot of fun hobbies she enjoys when she’s not booking deals and helping customers plan the most exciting celebrations of their lives. As a new Dallas resident, she enjoys exploring new neighborhoods and finding great local spots! She also likes spending time with her boyfriend Kelly, her dog Sookie, and kitten Eleven. A woman of many interests, she appreciates wine tasting, working out on her Peloton, and spending time with friends and family.

Legends Hall wouldn’t be the success that it is without dedicated employees like Emily. If you are looking for the perfect venue for your next big event, give her a call!

The Bob Jones Nature Center hosted the City of Southlake’s 2nd annual Monarch Butterfly Festival on the morning of Saturday, September 26. 280 guests of all ages joined in the release of 400 monarch butterflies to celebrate the monarch migration.

The Perennial Garden Society (PGS) sponsored the butterfly purchase with a $1,500 donation. Master Gardeners from the Tarrant and Denton County chapters spent the entire summer working hard to prepare the garden beds around the Nature Center for butterfly and human visitors alike. Their hard work paid off, too, because the grounds are absolutely stunning.

With help from PGS, all 400 butterflies were “tagged” with a small sticker on their outer wing printed with a unique identification number. All butterflies released are registered with Monarch Watch, a University of Kansas research project focusing on the migration and well-being of the monarch population. Any citizen who finds a tagged butterfly can contact Monarch Watch, report the identification number, and assist researchers in tracking this year’s migration.

The monarch migration continues to be one of the most intriguing events in natural history that inspires and amazes scientists, naturalists, and onlookers alike. “Being able to partner with the Perennial Garden Society to be a part of this research project is so important for us,” said Nature Programs Coordinator Hannah Nyquist. “Southlake’s position along the migration path gives residents the opportunity to observe and aid monarchs as they make their journey. Having a combination of nectar plants and milkweed (a host plant for caterpillars) available is incredibly important for the success of the monarch population.”

This year, the COVID-19 outbreak posed a unique challenge for the event’s organizers considering the event has seen hundreds of attendees in years past. However, the Southlake Community Services team was able to successfully recreate the structure of the event in order to keep attendants safe while still hosting a beautiful and educational celebration of the amazing monarch butterfly. “At first we weren’t sure we were going to be able to have the event,” says Special Events Coordinator, Sarah Binion. “But this event is important for the community and we were determined to find a way to make the festival happen. It brings so much joy to the people who come and we didn’t want our residents to miss out. Especially in a year when so much has already been taken away, we wanted to be able to give the community this special day.”

Instead of one large gathering and a scheduled release of all butterflies at once as is typical for the festival, the event was divided into pre-registered sessions to maintain smaller numbers. Each family group was escorted to a private station where they were instructed about how to release their butterflies. This new setup inadvertently created a much more intimate and personalized setting for each group to move at their own pace, making this year’s event a truly unique experience.
