The Carroll ISD ESL Department hosted an event on Saturday, April 5 at Bob Jones Park. Organizers say approximately 50 people attended the district’s first ever ESL Family Day event that featured free ice cream and the opportunity to connect with the community of English Language Learners.
“It was our departments attempt to bring together the international community that is growing in our district,” said Monica Gattshall. Gattshall is the English as a Second Language Coordinator for Carroll ISD. She said families from across the globe attended the event which included Mandarin Chinese, Indian, Dutch and Spanish speakers.
Elementary, middle school and secondary ESL students were there. Younger children enjoyed playing on the playground while the older students participated in a spirited game of soccer. Parents had the opportunity to meet the ESL teachers and ask questions regarding TELPAS and STAAR testing as well as get information about summer school, classes for next school year, summer reading lists and resources in the community.
