Important Information on Open Carry Law that Takes Effect on January 1, 2016

As many Texans and Southlake residents are aware, House Bill 910, regarding the Open Carry law, will take effect on Friday, January 1, 2016. When the new law goes into effect it will allow individuals that carry a valid Concealed Handgun License or CHL, to carry a handgun visible on their person.  This means that Southlake residents may see individuals openly carrying firearms in public.

Whether you possess a valid Concealed Handgun License or not, the Southlake Police Department is encouraging all Southlake citizens to educate themselves on Texas’ new Open Carry Law.  It is very important for individuals to have a full understanding of the new handgun law.

The Southlake Police Department is providing several links that include more detailed information including the most frequently asked questions.  As with the current concealed handgun laws, businesses may opt to ban permit holders from openly carrying a weapon on their premises by displaying a sign that bears language that is outlined in the new law. The details for the signs can be found in the frequently asked questions link below.

We will update this story as new information becomes available.
