Yearly Water Tower Maintenance to Impact Water Pressure

Starting Monday, February 4, 2019, Southlake Water Utilities will be removing the Florence Elevated Water Storage Tower, in the northwest side of Southlake, from service for routine cleaning.  Work is expected to be completed by Friday, February 18.

In order to complete the annual cleaning, all high-pressure plane customers will be placed on the larger low-pressure plane during this scheduled event. As a result, some customers may experience lower water pressure while on the low-pressure plane. Customers living the closest to the Florence water tower on Bend Road will likely notice a change in water pressure first; this could be as early as mid-day Monday, February 4.

High Pressure Plane Map“This annual cleaning is part of the Water Utilities Maintenance Program. Cleaning all the water storage facilities helps us ensure we have the best possible drinking water for Southlake,” notes Public Works Water Supervisor Kyle Flanagan. “I know this is going to be an inconvenience to some customers, but taking the time to really clean out the storage facilities is all about protecting public health. Clean water storage facilities mean clean drinking water.  We really appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding during this essential routine cleaning.”

Flanagan explains that the winter maintenance starts with the three 1.5 million gallon low-pressure plane storage facilities and ends with the 1.5 million gallons high-pressure tower to have the least amount of impact on customers.

“Our usage data shows that typically January and February are the months with the lowest usage rates, so it makes the best sense to clean the storage facilities now,” Flanagan explained. “We have already completed the cleaning of the low-pressure storage facilities; once this last tower is clean, this project will be done for the year.”

Cleaning will include draining the tower, pressure washing the interior, disinfecting the tower and then taking water samples to test for water quality before the tower is filled again.
