Fix a Leak Week 2019!

If you ever had a pesky leak then join the movement and celebrate Fix a Leak Week 2019.

The annual celebration goes from March 18-24 and focuses on educating the public on small leaks that can have a huge impact in or outside the home.

In celebration of Fix a Leak Week, a functional display has been placed in Town Hall to demonstrate a real toilet with a real leak.  The purpose of the display is to show that while toilet leaks may be small and a nuisance to fix, they can waste a lot of water and increase your water bill.

“The toilet on the display is set up with its own EyeOnWater account, titled Mister Toilet appropriately,” said Environmental Coordinator, Ashley Carlisle. The EyeOnWater App is an application that assists users in managing their water utility accounts and gives them 24/7 access to their water consumption, including the detection of leaks.

Small household leaks are an easy fix and early leak detection can save you up to 10 percent on your water bill. In 2016 cellular technology was installed on every meter in the City to help conserve water and alert the customer of potential leaks. “Residents can take advantage of the opportunity this technology provides by signing up for EyeOnWater to see their hourly water usage and set leak alerts,” said Carlisle.

If the City notices a leak above five gallons an hour, Utility Billing will mail a postcard alerting the owner of a potential leak. If the leak is consistently over 100 gallons an hour, the City will send out a Field Customer Service Technician to attempt to reach the customer face-to-face and ensure there are no problems on the City’s side of the meter.

If you suspect a leak outside the home, the City offers a W.I.S.E. Guys program that can help identify leaks on irrigation systems. “In all cases though, the owner is urged to contact a plumber immediately to stop the problem,” said Carlisle.

How the City can Help You Get Your Yard Ready

The first day of spring is just days away, is your yard ready? If not, it’s perfectly fine, the good news is the City of Southlake offers a variety of programs to assist residents with their yard necessities, from irrigation systems, to mosquito traps, to landscaping, we’ve got you covered.

If you need help with your irrigation system, sign up for our W.I.S.E. Guys program. W.I.S.E. Guys is a voluntary water conservation program designed to help you understand how to run your irrigation system more efficiently. First, make sure you have an EyeOnWater account. Then, all you need to do is fill out the signup form and you will receive an automatic email from the program confirming you have signed up for an evaluation. A licensed irrigator will set up an appointment with you and perform an evaluation on your sprinkler system with you.  You can even apply for a rebate of up to $200 if you make any of the recommended repairs!

The City also helps with mosquito control efforts to reduce the risk of mosquito-transmitted disease. Our Office of Emergency Management can check your yard for mosquito-prone areas, all you have to do is call 817-748-8903 or email oem@ci.southlake.tx.us

If you need to know what to plant and where to plant, our Environmental Coordinator can provide you with resources to help you select native and adaptive North Texas plants for your landscaping. You can reach her at acarlisle@ci.southlake.tx.us, or you can check out our region’s Texas SmartScape website. After you’re done with planting, Republic Services offers bulk trash pickup so you can haul away your spring trimmings.

With these services available at your fingertips, your yard will be the envy of all yards.

Residents Could Receive a $200 Rebate Following Irrigation Evaluation

Making changes to an irrigation system can save a significant amount of water, but can also be costly. In order to make these repairs and upgrades more accessible, the City of Southlake is offering up to a $200 rebate for changes to your system that will increase its efficiency in watering your landscape. Earlier this month the City of Southlake mailed residents in the 76092 zip code information regarding this opportunity for qualifying residential water customers.

To qualify for this rebate residents must complete an irrigation evaluation with the W.I.S.E Guys. Once an evaluation has been completed on your irrigation system, you may consider having some of the inefficiencies found in your system repaired or upgraded. After completion of repairs or upgrades to your home’s system by a licensed irrigator, you may apply for a rebate of up to $200. This rebate is a match of funds for applicable items and costs accrued to make repairs or upgrades, and is limited to items recommended by the W.I.S.E Guys during their evaluation or installation of water-saving technology.

Both offers for the W.I.S.E. Guys evaluation and the rebate have limited availability. All evaluations and rebates are available on a first come, first serve basis.
