Distance Runners Headed For Austin

Dragon Trevor Gilley, running in front, is headed for the state track and field meet and will compete in the 1,600 meters.

Carroll holds a long-standing tradition of producing outstanding distance runners. The Class 5A Region I meet provided more proof. The Dragons earned three 5A state qualifiers at the meet held last weekend in Lubbock. Two Lady Dragons earned region titles in both distance events.

Felice Johnson won the 3,200 meters finishing with a time of 11:04, which was more than six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Courtney Kriegshauser won the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:02, more than three seconds ahead of second place. The Lady Dragons finished fifth overall in team points with 36.

Meanwhile, the Dragons will be represented in Austin again by distance runner Trevor Gilley. The junior finished second in the 1,600 meters in a close finish. Gilley finished in 4:16.31 and the winner Robert Domanic of Hebron timed 4:16.19. Gilley will aim for a medal at state after finishing fourth last spring.

The Class 5A State Track and Field meet will be held Friday-Saturday, May 11-12 at Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.
