Golden Moment: Dragon Wrestler Grabs State Title

GARLAND – Carroll Dragon senior wrestler Michael Basler entered the UIL state wrestling tournament ranked No. 3 in his weight class. But Basler showed he was the best in state when it counted most.

Basler won the state championship by pinning Arlington Bowie’s Abbas Mounshed in the 160-pound title match Saturday at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. Basler finished third at the regional tournament and was a mission for bigger things at the state tournament. Basler’s gold medal run was propelled by defeating No. 2-ranked Masahiro Ward of El Paso Franklin in triple overtime in the semifinals. Basler, who avenged a regional loss to Ward, went 4-0 at the state meet and finished the year 41-2.

No. 1-ranked Slater Johnson of Amarillo Tascosa finished third.

Basler ends his impressive high school career with two state tournament appearances and a historical title addition to Carroll’s legacy of champions.
