Planned Runway Maintenance Closure March 27th Could Lead to Aircraft Noise this Weekend

The City of Southlake has received the following information from the DFW Noise Compatibility Office.  Citizens with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact  the Noise Compatibility Office.   The telephone hotline, 972-973-3192, is manned 24/7. DFW_airpot-300x300DFW plans to close Runway 18L/36R at 10:45PM, Friday, 27 March, through 6PM, Saturday, 28 March. This period will be used to upgrade the runway distance remaining signs.   Aircraft that would have used the runway during the closure period will be dispersed among the operational runways.   The National Weather Service currently forecasts variable winds during the 19 hour maintenance closure period with no significant north winds during the period. However, if this forecast is not valid and significant north winds do occur, the FAA may need to use Runway 13R/31L, the west diagonal runway, for jet departures.

Following this weekend, and over the next two weeks there will be no scheduled daytime runway closures. Below is the tentative schedule for closures for necessary pavement, electrical, navigation aids, signage, drainage, lighting and other infrastructure repair, upgrade and maintenance activities:

April 18-19 Runway 18L/36R
April 25-26 Runway 18L/36R
May 2-3 Runway 18L/36R
May 9-10 Runway 17L/35R

DFW Airport Plans to Close Runway 13R/31L for 60 Day Period

DFW_airpot-300x300The City of Southlake has received the following from DFW Airport Noise Office:

DFW Airport plans to close Runway 13R/31L for the 60 day period, June 18 thru August 17, 2014.  This closure will be to replace runway shoulders and blast pads, update distance remaining signage, various electrical upgrades, painting and various adjacent repairs.

DFW Airport Runways Closures could Increase Noise in Area Cities

Due to airport runway maintenance projects, DFW Airport will close the following runways:

  • Runway 18R/36L – Scheduled to close on or about Friday, 23 August thru Sunday, 22 September 2013
  • Runway 18L/36R – Scheduled to close on or about Friday, 27 September thru Sunday, 27 October 2013

It is very likely that there will be periods during these extended closures when north winds prevail, mandating the use of Runway 13R/31L for jet departures.  The cities immediately surrounding the airport could all experience increased  noise levels as a result.

Increased Noise over Southlake Expected due to Delay in Airport Construction

Due to weather delays, the runway construction project at DFW airport will not be complete by Saturday, September 22nd as originally scheduled.

According to officials at DFW Airport, the project won’t be complete until the end of next week (week of 9/24).  DFW has also indicated that northeast winds are forecast for the entire day Sunday (9/23) meaning the west diagonal runway will be utilized once again for jet departures.  Southlake residents will notice a noise increase on Sunday as the planes leave the metroplex.  Winds are expected to return to normal Monday morning.

Increase in Airport Noise Over Southlake Continues Due to Construction and Shifting Winds

Due to the cold front and northerly winds expected to arrive Thursday afternoon (9/13), airplanes from DFW will again be redirected.   Southlake residents may notice increased departure noise (as planes depart to the north) until the wind returns to its normal direction, and the airport returns to normal south-flow operations.  The City would like to emphasize that this is a temporary situation with winds returning to their normal flow this weekend.

In August, DFW airport notified the City of Southlake that wind shifts could change departure routes to the north during a temporary runway construction project expected to continue until September 22nd.  While construction takes place on the normal runway, diagonal runways are utilized for take-offs and landings until the construction project commences. Under typical, south-flow wind conditions, the diagonal runways are used for landings only.  The increased noise level is primarily due to the increase in flight departures over Southlake.

According to the airport, south winds are expected Saturday evening (9/15), returning the airport to the normal south-flow operations.  This will decrease the use of the diagonal runways and limit the flight noise experienced by Southlake residents. If the winds diminish sufficiently the FAA may be able to conduct southern departures part of the time during this period.

Another Shift in Winds Causes Increase in Airport Noise Over Southlake Due to Construction

Due to the cold front expected to arrive after midnight Friday (9/7) and the northerly winds expected with it, airplanes from DFW will be redirected.   Southlake residents may notice increased departure noise (as planes depart to the north) until the wind changes and the airport returns to normal south-flow operations.  The City would like to emphasize that this is a temporary situation with winds returning to their normal flow early next week.

In August, DFW airport notified the City of Southlake that wind shifts could change departure routes to the north during a temporary runway construction project expected to continue until September 22nd.  While construction takes place on the normal runway, diagonal runways are utilized for take-offs and landings until the construction project commences.
