City Council Approves 5-year Renewal of Contract for Solid Waste and Recycling Services

Republic Waste Services of Texas, Ltd. will continue to provide trash and recycling collection services in Southlake for another five years. The renewed contract was approved by Southlake City Council at their August 21st meeting.

The new contract for residential and commercial properties begins October 1, 2018, and maintains current service levels while adding on one service enhancement for residential customers. New in October, will be the addition of bulk cardboard recycling. This is a frequent request from residents, especially near the holiday season and for new move-ins. Commercial customers will also continue to be offered curbside recycling to businesses that do not have the option to utilize recycling dumpster services.

Under the contract renewal, residential collections will increase by $1.03 on October 1. The trash rate will increase annually by three percent and the recycling rates will be adjusted annually based on processing costs. Commercial collections and roll-off rates will increase by three percent on October 1 and three percent annually under the contract renewal.

The City first entered into a contract with Republic in 2007 for 18 months and has continued to renew for five-year periods since then. Before Republic contracts are renewed, the City reviews performance and quality measures. These include responsiveness to customer complaints, collection of waste following a missed pickup, spillage, and timeliness of collection. Republic has not only met, but well exceeded these performance expectations.

Also reviewed in the renewal process are the services offered by Republic. Current residential services include two weekly garbage collections, one weekly recycling pick up, bagged grass collection, curbside leaf recycling, household hazardous waste collection event, scheduled bulk loose brush collection and bundled/bulk crush collection.
