Bicentennial Park & Playground Grand Opening scheduled for September 12, 2015

Bicentennial Park & PlaygroundThe City of Southlake is excited to announce that the Grand Opening of Bicentennial Park & Playground will be Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 9:00 AM.

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to join Southlake Mayor, Laura Hill as the City opens the new  playground at Bicentennial Park! Attendees can enjoy all the features of the new playground which include zip lines, slides, a rope pyramid, sand castle building, water play and more! Plus, Kona Ice will be at the event offering snow cones from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM!

SinMiracle League Fieldce December 2013, the City has been working with Schrickel, Rollins & Associates, Inc. and Dean Construction to give the Southlake community a state-of-the-art park for kids of all ages to enjoy. Improvements to the park include a new playground, a Texas Rangers Miracle League Field, a 60/90 baseball field, new concession/restroom facilities, enhancements to the original baseball 4-plex, a new Park Division Office, and new trails.

OneBicentennial Park of the most unique features of Bicentennial Park is the new playground! At approximately 1.3 acres, it will offer an abundance of natural play opportunities for kids of all ages. It features two play areas — one designed specifically for toddlers and the other for older children. The playground will also include three pavilions and a large open picnic space.

Park goers will notice a mommy dragon and baby dragon around the outskirts of the playground that house natural play elements for children to climb and explore on.  The City welcomes everyone to come out to the Grand Opening on September 12, and the park and playground will resume normal play hours (Sunday – Monday from 6:00 AM – 11:00 PM) after that date.

Acoustic Shade Comes to Southlake for a Free Concert on September 13

Acoustic ShadeSouthlake, Texas – Arts Council Northeast and the City of Southlake are pleased to welcome Acoustic Shade for a concert on September 13, 2014, at Southlake Town Square.

Acoustic Shade is comprised of three amazing and talented musicians. The lead vocalist, Stephan Bailey, has incredible vocal range and a witty stage presence. Close your eyes when he sings, and you’ll think you’re in the presence of James Taylor himself. Their acoustic guitarist, Gaylerd Wineriter, fills the room with extreme acoustic sounds by playing lead riffs, bass patterns, and chords simultaneously. Dave Nix, the band’s incredibly talented drummer/percussionist, brings the trio together with his blend of hot percussions and background sound mixes.

Acoustic Shade plays the most popular and memorable classic songs from the 70’s and today’s most popular hits. Their set list  includes songs from The Eagles, James Taylor, REO Speedwagon, Billy Joel, Elton John, George Strait, CCR, The Beatles, Jason Maraz, Simon and Garfunkel, Keith Urban and many more.

Through the MasterWorks Series, Arts Council Northeast and the City of Southlake present free performances on selected evenings throughout the year. The MasterWorks Series is designed to offer a variety of quality family entertainment to the community by utilizing the talent of local, regional, and national artists.

The City of Southlake Senior Activity Center Visits the W.P. Kloster Museum & Dublin Bottling Works Tour on September 4, 2014

dublin bottling worksJoin the Southlake Senior Activity Center in visiting the W.P. Kloster Museum. This museum focuses on the Dublin Bottling Works unique history and includes a huge collection of memorabilia collected by W.P. Kloster himself. The Southlake Senior Activity Center bus will depart on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. and will return to the Center at 4:00 p.m. Please note that the arrival and return times are subject to change.

Kloster loved all things classic soda and his extensive collection includes many rare pieces. The tour ends in Old Doc’s Soda Shop, where you can browse the shop, step up on the soda fountain, or purchase one of the many Dublin Bottling Works tasty products!

The cost for transportation for this event will be $7.00 and admission for the event will cost $4.00. Attendees will need to bring extra money for lunch and other purchases.

paris-texasLet’s go to Paris! Well…..Paris, Texas anyway! The Southlake Senior Activity Center is taking a trip to see some of the top attractions in Paris, Texas! The Eiffel Tower Replica, the Jesus in Cowboy Boots statue, Historical Downtown Paris, and much more!

The Southlake Senior Activity Center bus will depart on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. and will return to the Center at 5:00 p.m. Please note that the arrival and return times are subject to change.

Mini Huddle Begins September 8 for Ages 4-5

Mini HuddleDOWN, SET, HUT! Football season is right around the corner and the Southlake Community Services Department is offering a Mini-Huddle program for preschoolers this Fall.  All four and five year olds are invited to learn about the game of football in a fun environment from September 8 – October 1.

Boys and girls will learn the fundamentals of flag football: passing, rushing, receiving and some defense. Mini-Huddle emphasizes the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship and most of all, having FUN.  Let your superstar shine in this non-competitive environment while learning the game of football.

Practice will begin on Monday, September 8. Teams will meet every Monday and Wednesday through October 1.  There are two different session times parents can choose from; 4:30 – 5:15 p.m. or 5:30 – 6:15 p.m.  Parents, be sure to join us on our final day of practice as our Mini Football Players demonstrate their skills in the “Skills Showcase.”

Local Punt, Pass & Kick Competition- September 28

The City of Southlake invites all boys and girls, ages 6-15, to come out and show off their skills at the annual Punt, Pass and Kick (PP&K) Competition on Saturday, September 28th. The Competition will be held at North Park, located at 200 E. Dove Rd, from 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. Pre-registration is not required.Every year, more than 3.5 million participants nationwide compete in the NFL PP&K Program.

Boys and girls get the opportunity to compete against their peers in punting, passing and kicking contests (based on distance accuracy) in local, sectional, NFL Team Championship and National Championship levels. Five age groups (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15) are eligible to compete. Participants must show proof of age with a birth certificate. Age is determined as of December 31, 2013.

All local competition champions, in each age and gender division, will advance to one of eleven sectional competitions held in October. The top four champions in each sectional competition will advance to the Team Championship held at a Dallas Cowboys game. Participants who place in the top four at the Cowboys game will get the opportunity to move ahead to the National Championship held at an NFL Playoff game in January.

Fall Family Campout 2013: New Rescheduled Date set for Oct 19-20!

Summer has ended and cooler temperatures are upon us. It’s time to head outside again with the family and enjoy the great outdoors and everything nature has to offer. Join us for the annual Fall Family Campout! The campout will be Saturday, October 19th though Sunday, October 20th at the Bob Jones Park Day Camp area (near BooBoo’s Buddies Dog Park). Tent set up begins at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Activities will include hiking, playing games, roasting marshmallows and listening to stories around the campfire.  The family can also participate in our annual scavenger hunt, learn about geocaching and do a little star gazing!The cost is $25.00 per campsite, which includes the cost for two  campers. Each additional camper is $10.00 and there is a limit of five people per campsite. The registration fee includes dinner on Saturday and breakfast Sunday morning. Children must register with at least one adult.
