More than Books: Southlake Public Library Offers Visitors Options for Learning and Fun

Through offering the latest bestselling books, blockbuster movies, special resources and exciting events, the Southlake Public Library is turning the page on typical library expectations. No matter the subject, chances are there is something for every reader among the more than 45,000 printed titles for children, teens and adults, current magazine selections, and downloadable eBooks and audiobooks. From helping students with school projects or test prep, to assisting job hunters or individuals wanting to learn a new language, the research center offers multiple online investigative tools and databases accessible from any computer.

The Southlake Library also serves the community through a vast selection of year-round and seasonal programming. In addition to continuous favorites, such as weekly story time programs, patrons can find art classes, reading programs, STEAM programs focused on science education, and special events each month.

A fan favorite is the Library’s Southlake Summer Reading Program which came to a close on August 12. The annual 10-week program is designed to encourage families to incorporate reading into their summer fun and this year’s stats prove that it is once again a bestseller:

  • The Library hosted 3,911 summer readers, including 563 preschoolers, 2,074 children, 254 teens, and 1,020 adults.
  • Preschoolers completed 25 pre-literacy activities; children and teens read over 32,000 hours and completed over 7,500 book reviews; and adults used the online Summer Reader Program to share reviews of over 500 books.
  • The Library also led 52 special programs for families with 9,000 visitors.

Because of the generous donations from Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty and Friends of Southlake Library, readers were treated to rewards for their accomplishments. More than 50 readers won prize drawings for their excellent participation. Although summer programming has come to an end, an exciting fall lineup is scheduled:

  • Pumpkin Painting Palooza on October 10 will offer visitors a seasonal chance to enjoy pumpkin painting and snacks.
  • Pet Costume Parade on October 29 will allow visitors to bring their best dressed pets for some pre-Halloween fun.
  • Literary Clue Night on November 5 will provide 10+ year olds a chance for a real-life literary inspired game of Clue, complete with good times and snacks.
  • A Tale of Two Turkeys Story Time on November 16 will include songs, merriment and live turkeys, just in time for Thanksgiving.
  • During Story Time with Mrs. Claus December 19, Santa’s Mrs. will share stories, cocoa, cookies and fun.
  • Christmas Cookie Decorating on December 20 will offer a festive afternoon of decorating, tasting, carols and laughter for all ages.
  • During Holiday Crafternoon on December 21, the Library will lead teens and adults in advanced holiday crafts, while children under 10 will find activities in the kids’ area.
  • Visitors of Mr. Vic’s Holiday Extravaganza on December 22 will enjoy Mr. Vic’s stand-up comedy, insane holiday songs, side-splitting audience participation and puppet hilarity.

With options stretching far beyond the pages of books, the Southlake Public Library is the place to be for learning and fun. As Southlake City Librarian Cynthia Pfledderer describes, the Library is a community resource for all ages and interests.

“The Southlake Library is here to support the community by offering free access to quality materials, programs and resources. Our goal is to make life and work in Southlake more enjoyable and successful; from baby to senior, we are here to serve,” stated Pfledderer.
