Stock Up on Emergency Preparation Supplies during Texas Sales Tax Holiday April 22-24

Spring in Texas brings bluebonnets, rain showers and often times, thunderstorms and tornadoes. This is why it’s important to be prepared for severe weather before it arrives. Certain supplies for emergency situations will be sold tax-free in Texas during the 2017 Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday, April 22-24.

“The state of Texas has taken on this initiative to ensure Texans can prepare themselves for disaster. This demonstrates the state’s commitment to disaster preparedness and mitigation for residents, and offers an opportunity for residents to set themselves up for success if confronted with an emergency situation,” stated Eric Hutmacher, emergency management coordinator for the City of Southlake.

There is no limit to the number of qualifying items that can be purchased. Specific items include:

  • Portable generators (less than $3,000)
  • Emergency ladders, hurricane shutters (less than $300)
  • Batteries, coolers, fire extinguishers, fuel containers, light sources (candles, flashlights, lanterns), radios, smoke detectors, tarps, etc. (less than $75)

Certain items that do not qualify include:

  • Batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles
  • Camping stoves, camping supplies
  • Chainsaws
  • Plywood
  • Extension ladders, stepladders
  • Tents
