Wireless Network Expanded in Southlake Town Square

FreeSouthlakeWifiWireless connectivity in Southlake Town Square just got better, faster and easier thanks to a major IT upgrade by the City of Southlake. As part of its Southlake 2030 Plan ̶ which serves as the City’s roadmap for the next 20 years ̶ the Economic Development & Tourism Master Plan includes a section for visitor amenities. The new and improved wireless network, supported by Internet provider OneSource, is accessible for free via the ID: FreeSouthlakeWifi.

According to Greg Hendricks, director of IT for the City of Southlake, wireless service at Town Square had previously been available only near the gazebo area and was spotty throughout the remainder of Town Square (outdoors).

“This wireless upgrade encompassed approximately 1 million square feet and now provides great wireless coverage throughout Town Square’s outdoor public areas,” he says, noting it won’t interfere with private networks offered by retailers. “Our first test of high usage will be during Southlake Oktoberfest coming up October 3-5.”

The three-month installation process increased the wireless network capacity from approximately 5MB to 50MB and is routed through the City of Southlake’s network.

“Enhancing the availability of free Wi-Fi at Town Square and other public areas is money well spent,” states Tourism Marketing Manager Jill Lind, noting the funds to pay for the wireless network was taken from the 7% hotel occupancy tax. “Wi-Fi is another piece of the overall exemplary customer service experience Southlake is striving to create.”
