The Carroll Dragons opened the Class 6A Division II playoffs with a home victory against Wylie.
The 28-3 victory marked Carroll’s 10th consecutive victory in the bi-district playoff at Dragon Stadium. Carroll improved to 10-1 and faces a showdown Friday with DeSoto in the Region I semifinals.
DeSoto is ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press poll and Carroll is No. 8.
Against Wylie, the Dragon offense took some time to get going while their defense never budged. Carroll got on the board in the second quarter behind two touchdown passes by Mason Holmes to Clayton Keyes and Jackson Davis. After a scoreless first quarter, the Dragons held a 21-3 lead.
The Dragons defense had two interceptions and held Wylie without a touchdown and included a goal-line stand.
Carroll senior running back Audricke Gaines added another 100-yard game with 152 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown. Receiver Clayton Keyes had six catches for 130 yards. Holmes was 9-for-20 with 195 yards.
The Dragons defeated second-place Hebron 52-34 at Dragon Stadium to finish with an undefeated district run. Carroll finished the regular season 9-1 and 7-0 in district and advances to the Class 6A Division II playoffs this week against Wylie.
The formula for the Dragons was their rushing attack. Carroll rushed for 414 yards and averaged eight yards per carry. Leading the way was senior running back Audricke Gaines, who rushed for 240 yards on 28 carries and four touchdowns. Tre Sledge added 86 yards and Jack Johansson had 58 yards and two touchdowns.
Gaines finished the regular season with 1,265 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns.
Quarterback Mason Holmes was 9-for-11 with 91 yards and threw one touchdown.
Carroll forced two turnovers and held a 35-21 lead by halftime.
