New this Spring: After-School Club at Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve

UPDATE: March 26 Event Cancelled.

Join us this spring for our first ever after-school club at Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve, BJNCP Explorers! BJNCP Explorers is perfect for young naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts (ages 5-11). We meet once a month from 4:00-6:00pm to explore the Preserve trails, study local wildlife, and learn how we can become stewards of the land.

Each month we will focus on a different topic as we explore. We will start the year by focusing on the animals who live at the Preserve in the winter, how they survive in the cold, and how we can help them thrive. In February, we will become Ornithologists (biologists who study birds) and investigate the birds migrating through Southlake.

As the Preserve awakens from the winter we will spend March discovering new life at BJNCP as migrating animals return, hibernators come out, and new plants and animals arrive. Finally, in April, we will celebrate Earth Day and discuss how we can make every day Earth Day!

Registration is separate for each monthly class, so you don’t have to commit to the entire session (although we hope you will!). Join us for an adventurous semester of hikes, investigations, experiments, friendships, and more!

For more information visit experiencesouthlaketexas.com/bjncp.

Dates: January 30, February 27, March 26, April 30
Time: 4:00-6:00pm
Location: Bob Jones Nature Center & Preserve, 355 E Bob Jones Rd.

Become a Chess Wizard in Southlake’s November Chess Camp

Chess is more than just a fun and challenging game—it’s also a great workout for your brain! Southlake’s November Chess Wizards camp begins Tuesday, November 6.

Chess offers a number of benefits for children. According to Parents Magazine, the strategic nature of chess helps children refine their critical thinking and decision-making skills. It’s also been proven to have positive effects on visual memory, attention span and spatial-reasoning ability.

Chess Wizards is a premier chess camp that provides fun, accessible and challenging chess lessons to kids ages 6–16. As students learn the fundamentals of the game, they will also develop important skills that will help them throughout their lives: how to use logic to make strategic decisions, how to win graciously and how to accept defeat with dignity and sportsmanship.

All skill levels are welcome, and students will be divided into appropriate groups according to their chess experience. At the end of camp, each student will have had the opportunity to participate in a mini chess tournament.

November Chess Wizards Camp

Session Dates: November 6 – 27* (3 classes)
Time: Tuesdays, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Cost: $45
*No class on November 20.

If you would like more information about Chess Wizards, call Southlake Parks and Recreation at (817) 748-8019.

Summer Registration for Southlake Parks and Recreation Opens April 3rd!

Summer is almost here! That means it’s time to start registering for all the great things Southlake Parks and Recreation has planned. In preparation for the opening of The Marq Southlake Champions Club in summer of 2018, Parks and Recreation is changing registration software.

The new software, CSI, will go live Monday, April 3 at 8:00am when summer registration opens. Registration will also be available in-person at Southlake Town Hall in Training Room 3C. City staff will be standing by to assist customers in creating an account in CSI and registering for their favorite summer programs. Take a sneak peek at all the exciting summer activities in the Summer 2017 Southlake Scene.

When participants go to register for programs on April 3rd they will notice the website looks a little different. Now, instead of having to search for an activity, you will be able to select a category to begin the search process.

One important transition note to keep in mind: All users will have to create a new account. Account information will NOT carry over from Active Network.

What does this mean for me?

Before actually registering for a program, you will be prompted to create a new account. Because CSI will also be used once Champions Club is fully operational, it will look like you are registering for a membership. Don’t worry, when you are asked to select your membership type, simply select the “Patron” membership and Parks and Recreation as the site. This will allow you to register as you normally would.

You will need to create your new account before you are able to register for summer programs like Camp Mania or Basketball, to name a few. Parents, when you are completing the account registration, be sure to list yourself as the “main member” on the account. Other family members, like spouses and children, will become “sub-members” on the account.

We understand change can sometime be confusing. We’re here to help! You can view the step-by-step instructions to help you set up you new CSI account or you can call us at (817) 748-8019.Southlake Parks and Rec CSI Transition 2016

Archery and Target Shooting

Want to try a new sport? Want to learn a new skill? Southlake Parks and Recreation has something for you!

Come get a taste of archery as we travel to a local range to learn from a certified instructor how to properly use a bow and arrow. After a brief talk on archery safety, you will be hitting the target in no time. Bring your friends ages 10 – 14, and compete to see who the best shot is on Saturday, April 1 at 8:30AM.

You can register your child online or at the Community Services office located at 1400 Main St, Suite 210.

Please contact (817) 748-8019 for more information.
