A major road improvement project will get underway on Monday, August 21, 2023 on North White Chapel near Bob Jones Park and Nature Center and Preserve. It will require the complete closure of the road for the project’s duration – approximately 18 months.

Improvements

The North White Chapel Boulevard – Kirkwood Branch Roadway, Bridge, Sidewalk, and Water Line Improvements include drainage, water line relocation, sidewalk, and roadway construction. The project’s scope is to raise the elevation of the roadway and construct a pedestrian pathway on the west side.

“Residents may recall in 2018 when storm waters flooded the bridge, causing it to close so the City could make necessary temporary repairs,” said Public Works Director Rob Cohen. “This [project] is a permanent solution designed to raise the roadway so it won’t be overtopped in the future.”

Cohen also noted that the construction of sidewalks will promote pedestrian mobility as it connects a significant portion of the trail segments in the northern part of the City.

Detour Route

Cohen noted that residents and drivers who are frequent the area should plan for a detour route that will be in place for the project’s 18-month duration.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we complete this project,” Cohen added. “Access to the Bob Jones Park, Nature Center and Preserve, the Claridan School, and residential homes will be affected, but we are committed to completing it as quickly and safely as possible.”
