On June 21st, 2022, the Southlake City Council recognized several officers and firefighters from the Southlake Police Department, Arlington Police Department, and Southlake Fire Department for their actions in saving a life on April 6th, 2022.

On that day, Officer Steven Werner had been dispatched to an accident on Highway 114.  When he arrived at the crash, he found off-duty Arlington Police Officer Dillon Haven there, who had seen the vehicle driving erratically before crashing.  The two recognized the driver was having a medical emergency and they were able to break out the car windows to get the driver out.

Officers administered CPR until Sergeant Kevin Diehl arrived with an AED (automated external defibrillator).  The officers used the AED and alternated CPR until Southlake Fire arrived to take the patient to the hospital.  Officer Werner, Sergeant Diehl, and Officer Haven all received a Life Saving Award.

Southlake Fire was also instrumental in saving this life and Engineer Kevin Barry, FTO Russell Brown, FTO Cody Pierson, Firefighter/Paramedic Cory Teague and Firefighter/Paramedic Ryan Steinkirchner received a Life Saving Award for their efforts.

“Stories like this are just confirmation of the good work you do and the great leadership of your Chiefs as well,” Mayor John Huffman said to the awardees at the City Council meeting.  “This man got to celebrate Father’s Day with his family because of your actions.”
