City Council approved the installation of Traffic Signal Network Communications – a technology that allows for real-time adjustments to alleviate traffic congestion at the March 21 City Council meeting.

“Currently, the City owns seven traffic signals, and when an issue arises, we dispatch staff to go on-site to investigate or service the traffic signal,” said Director of Public Works Rob Cohen. “Installing this new system would allow technicians to provide support off-site and remotely monitor traffic conditions and signal operations.”

The advantage of an intelligent transportation system is that it improves transportation safety and mobility and enhances productivity through advanced communications technology. This newfound capability to remotely support traffic signals would enable technicians to resolve any issues with the signal without being physically present at the site. This would also result in lesser downtime for the signal and facilitate a speedier resolution of traffic congestion problems.

“The City of Southlake is happy to provide this innovative solution to its residents and provide world-class service. Installation plans should begin at the end of April or early May 2023,” said Cohen.
