The City of Southlake’s Park Division is proud of the gorgeous community parks that make up our community’s green spaces. No park represents our city’s commitment to world-class public spaces for personal enjoyment more than our first and largest community park—Bicentennial Park.

Southlake residents and visitors stroll through the beautifully maintained trails at Bicentennial Park daily. From baseball practice and tennis classes to playing in the playground and walking through the Liberty Gardens, there is a unique spot for everyone at Bicentennial Park. But what makes this award-winning space so incredible?

Let’s get to know more about Bicentennial Park!

Bicentennial Park is a community park comprised of the first land assembled for park purposes in Southlake, with initial purchases and donations beginning in the 1970s. As the city acquired additional land, the park became the center of athletic facilities for Southlake.

Today, Bicentennial Park remains the heart of recreation in Southlake. Boasting various baseball and softball diamonds, a basketball court, the Southlake Tennis Center, a Miracle League, a playground, and our award-winning recreation facility, The Marq Southlake, Bicentennial Park is a world-class example of professional park planning.

While the temperatures are dropping, December is still a fabulous time to visit Bicentennial Park. Grab your hat and bundle up your kiddos for an afternoon of imagination at the Bicentennial Park Playground! Warm up with a brisk walk down the trails with your four-legged friends! If you prefer to spend your free afternoons indoors, check out the two indoor courts at the Southlake Tennis Center or work out at Champions Club at The Marq Southlake.

One of the most popular games across the U.S. is coming to Southlake soon!

The site plan for a pickleball complex to be placed in Bicentennial Park was recently approved at the June 21 City Council meeting.

The complex is set to be located between Unity Way and Freedom Lane, directly across from the Southlake Tennis Center.

The project will include:

  • Nine lighted pickleball courts.
  • One championship court.
  • Restrooms.
  • Plenty of shade and seating for socializing.

These future improvements were a top priority as a new park amenity within Southlake’s adopted Parks, Recreation & Open Space Master Plan.

“Pickleball has been rising in popularity for quite some time now,” said Director of Community Services Chris Tribble, “It’s great for all ages and skill levels, and it’s easy to learn if you’re not familiar with the concept.”

“We’re extremely excited about adding this new amenity to our park system,” Tribble said.

To review other plans, recommendations, goals, and objectives regarding Southlake’s parks and facilities, Parks, Recreation, & Open Space Master Plan is available online.

This weekend, a brisk streak of wind may have made its way through Bicentennial Park, but it did not stop the Miracle League of Southlake’s (MLS) athletes from playing a good baseball game.

Parents, teammates, and coaches all gathered at the Texas Rangers Miracle Field on Saturday, April 23, to support their families and friends for an MLS spring season game.

This community event allows parents and players within the area to fan out over their kids with the option to enjoy concessions in a safe environment.

The MLS is an organization that provides physically and mentally challenged kids opportunities to play a baseball game with a focus on learning good sportsmanship, commitment, and teamwork in an accessible environment.

This partnership dates back to 2013, when the City of Southlake, the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation, and the Miracle League of Southlake Organization came together and broke ground for the Texas Rangers Miracle League Field in Bicentennial Park.

Unlike traditional baseball fields, the Texas Rangers Miracle League Field was designed with the needs of individuals with special needs in mind.

Instead of dirt, the field is made of synthetic field turf for durability, safety, and performance. In addition, the playing areas are designed to eliminate barriers for players with special needs.

The organization also opens up the opportunity for kids to mix and mingle with other players, like MLS team member Haley Cruson.  When asked what is her favorite part of the games, she said, “Having fun with my friends.”

For kids like Matthew Clements, it's all about the game, “The most thing that I loved about Miracle League Baseball is I love hitting baseballs out of the field because it’s a home run,” Clements said.

The MLS program also offers volunteer opportunities for coaches, assistant coaches, game announcers, parent helpers, and hands-on assistance for the MLS’s younger athletes, by assigning them a Buddy.

Buddies accompany younger players on and off the field during a baseball game. They assist them with hitting the ball, traveling to the bases, and quality time if needed.

Their efforts and hard work allow parents more time to cheer from the stands while their kids enjoy a day on the field so that little players like Alex Zubillaga can have fun.

His mother is in full support of the program and looks forward to the games, “It’s an awesome program, the kids love it, the parents love it; we enjoy spending our Saturday mornings out at the ballpark,” Mrs. Zubillaga said.

Although there are a number of reasons the kids and parents come to play, they are all for a good cause.

Community Services staff received a pleasant surprise last Friday when they learned that Bicentennial Park won the TRAPS North Region Park Design Excellence Award!

Bicentennial Park is a community park comprised of the first land ever assembled for park purposes and serves as the heart of Parks and Recreation activities in Southlake. The multi-phase Bicentennial Park Masterplan Implementation project re-invigorated the park through years of careful planning, persistent teamwork, and thoughtful design. Beginning improvements in 2008 and continuing well into 2021, Bicentennial Park epitomizes world-class parks and recreation amenities. Years of collaboration between the City, residents, and Schrickel Rollins, and Associates, resulted in the opening of The Marq Southlake—our community recreation facility, a Miracle Field, all-abilities playground, Tennis Center, and more. Bicentennial Park is the premier recreation destination in Southlake thanks to these improvements and serves as an example of successful park redevelopment state-wide.

According to TRAPS North Region, “The awards committee had many wonderful entries to score, and it was a difficult task. Your nomination stood out above the rest to exemplify commitment and dedication in the field of parks and recreation. We are honored to present this award to you and for your commitment to excellence in all that you do in your daily pursuits.”

Recently, City staff celebrated the completion of Bicentennial Park improvements with video releases of the finished project and a popsicle celebration for all employees involved. It is an absolute honor to be recognized by our parks and recreation peers for the successful implementation of this tremendous project.

But wait, there’s more! Always striving for perfection, Bicentennial Park continues to improve. Throughout the development of the 2035 Parks, Recreation, & Open Space Master Plan adopted in June 2021, Park Board members and residents stated the desire for pickleball courts in the City.

In the fiscal year 2022, staff will begin adding a pickleball complex to Bicentennial Park to meet this community need and further solidify Bicentennial Park as the recreational heart of Southlake.

The City of Southlake Community Services Department will be presented with this award on Friday, November 5, 2021, at the TRAPS North Region Conference in Allen, TX. Congratulations to everyone that helped make Bicentennial Park the gem it is today!

Summertime and the living is easy—except for the mosquitoes are back with a vengeance!

There’s nothing we love more than hiking on the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve trails or playing baseball and tennis at Bicentennial Park. However, with the mosquito season in full swing, it’s time to take the necessary steps to fight the bite, Southlake!

If your blood is as sweet as you are, then you probably know the pain of taking a step outside to enjoy one of our lovely parks only to feel the instant sting of a mosquito bite. Mosquitos are prevalent this time of year, and with some North Texas mosquitoes carrying diseases, bite prevention is not merely a convenience, it’s a health necessity. Luckily for you, we have compiled a list of handy tips to help you fight the bite this summer.

Use insect repellent

It may not always smell pleasant but using insect repellent such as DEET is a must when you want to spend some time outdoors. There are even natural options such as lemon eucalyptus oil to help you keep mosquitos away from you.

Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants

Nothing says “hot girl summer” more than light and breezy long layers! By wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, you are limiting mosquitoes’ access to your skin. Not only is this helpful for preventing mosquito bites, but wearing long layers also protects you from the sun! Double win for enjoying our parks with ease of mind.

Use screens to protect your windows and doors

If you want to enjoy the Southlake summer breeze from the comfort of your own home, make sure to put up screens on your doors and windows to keep the critters outside.

Get rid of standing water

It’s been raining a lot in Southlake lately, and that means you may have areas of standing water near your home. Standing water provides the perfect environment for mosquitoes to breed. Look out for dog bowls, rain gutters, empty pots, and still fountains in your back yard to prevent unwanted visitors in your garden.

It’s mosquito time in North Texas, but if you take the tips we provided to heart, you can celebrate summer knowing you are doing what you can to fight the bite!
