The Community Services Programs Team launched Kids Club last Friday and had a successful first event!

The first Kids Club at Champions Club was last Friday, and everyone had a blast! Parents dropped off their kiddos from 6:30 PM to 11:00 PM for a night dedicated just for them.

Participants enjoyed swimming at the Champions Club Aquatics Center, playing games on the indoor turf, getting creative with crafts, having dinner, and a movie with friends! The staff took pride in watching the kids have fun, make new friends, and get their energy out in our world-class facility.

If you missed out on this month’s Kids Club, then mark your calendar for Friday, February 24. Kids Club is the perfect excuse for parents to go out on a date, check off any remaining errands from their list, or stay in and relax, knowing their kid is taken care of in a fun, safe, and structured environment. It’s a win-win! Nothing beats knowing your kids are having a blast while you can take a few hours for yourself.

We anticipate these events will sell out fast, so register right away!

Plan ahead and register for March and April’s dates as well! We can’t wait to see your child at Kids Club next month!

As you know, we are ramping up for another incredible Spring season, and we need your help to make this one the best yet!

If you love sports, want to give back to your community, or are looking for a creative way to earn volunteer hours, then becoming a volunteer coach is the way to go! We are looking for energetic teens and adults to coach our spring athletic leagues. Becoming a volunteer coach is the best way to support our teams for those that love working with kids or have a sporty teen at home who has natural leadership abilities!

Coaching requires 2-3 hours of your time each week. Through this minimal commitment, you can mentor your team to victory while passing on the incredible values of teamwork, dedication, and commitment to excellence. Volunteer coaching is a fun and rewarding way to serve our youth.

The Spring Flag Football Season begins on March 23 and runs through May 19.

The Spring Volleyball Season starts on April 1 and ends on May 20.

If you are interested in applying to coach, contact the Athletics Supervisor, Jonathan Weeks.

See you on the field/ court!

Future Broadway divas and Hip Hop stars: get ready to take center stage with our new spring arts programs!

Our Programs Team is always looking for ways to raise the bar and offer our residents unique and creative programs for their families. The arts are taking center stage this spring season with three new exciting arts programs.

It’s no secret that participating in arts programs early on promotes incredible life-long benefits. These include learning valuable socialization skills, boosting creativity, and building self-confidence. There’s a little artist inside every child, and these new programs aim to bring out the creator in everyone.

Here’s a behind-the-curtain preview of our upcoming arts programs:

Little MusicMaker
Give your child the gift of music early on and watch as they discover their voice and explore various musical instruments. Every class is a hands-on, live music-making experience and incorporates music from many cultures.

Register here.

Musical Theatre- Ages 3-5
Introduce your toddler to the magic of the theater! This 5-week program will teach your little performer listening skills, creativity, movement, and music! Each class will build on the previous one as students put together a complete number from a favorite movie-musical such as Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, or The Lion King. The final class consists of a small performance for family and friends!

Claim your spot here.

Hip-Hop/ Jazz Ages 14-18
If your teen loves to dance and is ready to take their love of movement to the next level, this beginner-level class is the perfect fit! Each class combines fun, high-energy combination work with basic jazz techniques in a non-intimidating setting. This class believes that anyone can dance and is the ideal starting point for the curious dancer not looking to join a studio.

There’s nothing the Community Services Athletics Division loves more than hearing success stories from our programs.

We recently received an incredible essay from one of our Jiu-Jitsu participants, Thomas Highsmith. Thomas recounts his experience moving to Southlake from Washington D.C. at eight years old and finding his home with Sensei George Weidenhof and the Southlake Jiu-Jitsu community.

Thomas felt like a “tiny twig in a forest of giant oak trees,” during his first few classes as a second grader. In order to accommodate his busy schedule, Thomas started out his Jiu-Jitsu journey in the advanced class. Rising to the challenge of being amongst older and more experienced peers, Thomas knew early on that Jiu-Jitsu was where he wanted to spend his evenings after school.

The road to becoming a black belt was long and winding. Thomas had to prove competency in over a dozen techniques and build up the stamina to learn more than 15 School Rules. Sensei Weidenhof’s community encouraged him in his practice and encouraged him to become a leader on and off the mat.

After multiple years of dedication, determination, and practice, Thomas Highsmith is officially a black belt! He feels “truly humbled by this experience, all I have learned, the history that precedes me, and the sacrifices of many people involved. I have gained so much confidence, kindled a burning internal desire to always achieve my very best, learned the difference between kindness and being nice, and am grasping the challenging tenets of effective leadership.”

Thomas’s story demonstrates the positive impact participating in youth athletics can have on a child’s life. Finding Jiu-Jitsu helped Thomas grow as an athlete, person, and leader and eased his transition to Southlake to the point of becoming an active participant in the community. The confidence Jiu-Jitsu gave Thomas on the mat transferred to him “actively embracing leadership roles in academic team projects and at the Southlake Public Library.” Thomas attributes this seamless transition to “the art of Jiujitsu, its virtues, Sensei’s consistent reinforcement, and the accountability he places upon every member of [the] class.”

Sensei Weidenhof was kind enough to pass Thomas’s moving essay to our staff. According to Weidenhof, he is “so proud of Thomas, an amazing young man! The support was the best from the monitors at the Front Desk to Athletics Supervisor Jonathan Weeks.”

Congratulations on your achievements, Thomas, and thank you for sharing your journey with us!

  • Donate toys for the Fire Department’s annual Toy and Food Drive. The Fire Department will be collecting toys through Thursday, December 22. Drop boxes are available at each station entry and the front entry to the Police Department.

We hope this list helps you finalize your holiday plans! The holidays can be wonderful and exhausting, so we hope everyone takes time to rest, recover, and create life-long memories with family and friends.

It’s almost the weekend, and it’s time to get outside and explore a new park! This week’s featured community park is Bob Jones Park!

Bob Jones Park is on the northeast side of town alongside N. White Chapel Boulevard. What began as a series of purchases from an underdeveloped small-lot mobile home park eventually became the nearly 500 acres of Cross Timbers habitat nature lovers enjoy today. Bob Jones Park boasts 13 soccer fields, a six-acre pond and fishing pavilion, equestrian trails, a softball complex, a cricket pitch, a playground, public art, and Boo Boo’s Buddies Dog Park. In addition, Bob Jones Park connects to the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve, the premier destination for nature exploration in Southlake.

Bob Jones Park is another shining example of Southlake’s dedication to world-class community parks. Combined with the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve, this community investment truly has something for every interest. On any given day, you can see our local Dragons running the trails, nature- lovers exploring the preserve, or athletes perfecting their craft. Our beautiful bat-wing pavilion is the perfect backdrop for an afternoon of fishing and enjoying a family picnic.

Those who enjoy art and history can check out the beautiful and interactive Bob and Almeady Jones statue installed last October. Visit the Bob Jones Nature Center to learn more about the local family that gave this gorgeous park its name.

Community parks are crucial to promoting healthy, happy, and active residents. We are proud to have many incredible community parks like Bob Jones Park in Southlake.

Visit Bob Jones Park before the year ends and make it a New Year’s Resolution to get outside and explore Southlake’s world-class parks system!
