This week on N. White Chapel Boulevard, irrigation is being installed in the medians. Also, this week, the installation for the street light bases is on schedule to be completed.

Sidewalk crews continue to install the sidewalk and the retaining wall, which is located on the west side of the road. Please keep in mind that traffic is now switched to allow crews to start work on the east side of the road when work is complete on the west side.

The masons are working on the capstones for the screening wall, and once that is complete, they will start installing the stone face on the retaining wall located on the west side.

This project is expected to be completed by summer 2022, weather permitting.

Can you believe it? The holiday season is here! As we prepare to shop, visit loved ones and join in on all the holiday festivities, we need to make sure that we are following safety protocols.

Here are best practices for road safety during the holiday season:

  1. Check weather conditions –

Being aware of the weather allows you to determine how long it will take to get to your destination and whether your vehicle is drivable for that particular road condition.

  1. Watch for pedestrians –

There’s no doubt that foot traffic increases during holiday season. Make sure you look around several times before you back up, drive through crosswalks and navigate through parking garages.

  1. Do not drive when you are sleep deprived –

Some businesses will open sooner and close later to accommodate customers. Make sure you get an adequate amount of rest before you leave home.

Enhancing Southlake’s mobility landscape is just one of the many roles the Southlake Mobility Team plays in the success of building a better transportation system that both pedestrians and commuters can enjoy.

For everyone to benefit and enjoy the community around us, we want to encourage everyone to fasten your seat belts before you hit the road.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts save more than 13,000 lives every year.

Buckling up helps secure you inside of your vehicle and acts as a defense mechanism against aggressive, impaired and distracted drivers.

Below is a list of seat belt guidelines by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that can help you stay safe.

  1. Place the shoulder belt across the middle of your chest and away from you neck.
  2. Adjust the lap belt across your hips below your stomach.
  3. Never put the seat belt behind your back or under an arm.

September is National Preparedness Month and while we prepare for inclement weather, we also need to prepare for running into bad weather while on the road.

Although these weather conditions are hard to predict at times, being prepared can help.

Here are a few safety measures to put into place prior to facing inclement weather.

  1. Keep windshield wipers updated
  2. Check tire pressure and tread
  3. Check car battery, hoses, belts and fluids before long road trips

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed 3,142 lives in 2019. Accidents due to distracted driving are preventable.

Even though you’re itching to read that text message your friend just sent or scroll your email at the red light, using your phone can wait until you’re parked or at your destination.

What can you do to end distracted driving? Follow our tips below:

  • Talk to your teen driver about distracted driving and refraining from using their cell phone while operating a vehicle.
  • Be a good example for those in your vehicle and don’t use your cell phone.
  • Use a buddy in the vehicle to check message or take phone calls if necessary.
  • Take the #JustDrive pledge and educate others about distracted driving.

Let’s make the world a better place with a resolution to stop distracted driving.

We’re constantly sending friends and family photos of our dog, memes and links to viral videos through text messages. As much as you would like to respond when you’re driving, DON’T. It can wait.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed the lives of 2,841 individuals in 2018. Similar research by the Texas Department of Transportation in 2019 showed 97,853 crashes were due to distracted driving, inattention or cell phone use.

This year, make it your resolution to stop texting and driving and help create safer roads for everyone.

Over the last few weeks, contractors have been working on S. Carroll Avenue in preparation for construction at the intersection of the southbound lanes at Zena Rucker Road and S. Carroll Avenue.

Due to the recent extension of Zena Rucker Road, traffic is expected to increase near and around the Shops of Southlake and the Park Village area.

The purpose of the S. Carroll Avenue project is to replace the current asphalt lanes with concrete. These efforts will improve mobility by ensuring that the roadway will be comprised of the same material. Concrete is more durable and sustainable than asphalt and is better for long-term use.

As of last week, crews have been on-site digging up asphalt on the surface as well as 12 inches below the surface in order to reset a firm sub-base to replace the asphalt with concrete. All the sub-base will be dug up first, and once all the sub-base has been completed, the concrete pouring process will begin.

As a part of the construction project, S. Carroll Avenue between Zena Rucker Road and La Paloma Drive has been closed until completion. Vinebrook Lane at S. Carroll Avenue is also closed, but only for four weeks.

Winding Lake Boulevard will be entrance-only from December 14 – December 18.

Construction equipment is currently stored along the closed southbound lane of S. Carroll Avenue and Cool River Drive. Driveways along Cool River Drive will not be blocked.

The entire project is expected to last two months, weather permitting.

These improvements are a part of the 2030 Master Mobility Plan with an estimated cost of $427,272.

The importance of signage is to keep drivers informed, increase road safety and reduce accidents. With multiple construction projects taking place simultaneously, it’s vital that motorists pay attention to speed limit signage while they are travelling through areas under construction.

Although signage is generally posted in construction zones to specify the speed limit, it’s good to remember that speed limits are reduced by 10 mph or more in construction areas.

Reducing the speed limit increases the safety of motorists, pedestrians and construction crews.

However, if you happen to approach a construction zone and do not see a speed limit sign, please report the missing speed limit sign to the Public Works Traffic Division at 817-748-8370 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please be sure to provide a specific address or the appropriate cross streets.

There has been a lot of roadwork happening on W. Chapel Downs lately. The construction on this road is a major component of the N. White Chapel Widening Project because it intersects with N. White Chapel and is adjacent to other roads that lead to the major intersection.

Over the last few weeks, contractors have worked to complete paving on W. Chapel Downs and storm drain installation on E. Chapel Downs.

E. Chapel Downs has been closed from N. White Chapel Boulevard to Saratoga Drive and traffic has been shifted to the east of W. Chapel Downs to allow drainage installation.

The drainage installation on Chapel Downs is expected to be completed within six to eight months, weather permitting.

Contractors have completed the excavation of excess dirt on N. White Chapel to grade the road and asphalting of the temporary road has started. Striping is estimated to start next week.

The entire project is estimated to be completed by Spring 2022, weather permitting.

The total N. White Chapel Widening Project is estimated to cost around $17 million.
