On Thursday, April 17th Call A Ride of Southlake honored their roster of volunteer drivers at the fifth annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. The event recognized the efforts of the 2013 volunteers, who drove more than 2,000 trips and almost 13,000 miles in support of Southlake seniors and disabled adults. CARS’ volunteers enable clients to get to medical appointments, go shopping, or attend activities at area Senior Activity Centers. This year’s event was held at Timarron Country Club and was sponsored by Frost Bank. Mimi Tran of Frost Bank said, “This event has been a great opportunity to let the public know about CARS and their appreciation for their volunteers but also to reach out to others who may be interested in becoming volunteer drivers.”
Call A Ride of Southlake (CARS) was formed in 2000 to provide seniors and disabled adults with non-emergency rides, enabling them to maintain a level of independence that they gave up when they stopped driving. Several City and County elected officials were on hand to highlight the volunteers’ efforts in support of area seniors and disabled adults. Mayor John Terrell and County Commissioner Gary Fickes made special presentations and Councilwomen Carolyn Morris and Pamela Muller were also in attendance.
“As a small nonprofit, we have to make every dollar count,” said Erik Phelps – Executive Director of CARS. “We depend on the generosity of Southlake merchants to give our deserving volunteers a small gift bag filled with discounts or gift cards to show our appreciation for their service to our clients throughout the year.” Kirby’s, Truluck’s and Corinthian Wellness Spa provided gifts for the drivers posting the most miles driven and the volunteer driver providing the most trips for the year. Some of the local merchants supplying gifts included: Speedy Bee, Kwik Kar, Duff’s, l’Occitaine, Wildwood, Feedstore, and Copeland’s. Additional donations were made by Southlake Newcomer’s Club, the Greater Southlake Women’s Society, Central Market and Office Depot.

A Lone Star Murder Mystery presentation, Derailed & Departed, is coming to the Southlake Senior Activity Center on Friday, May 16, 2014. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m., dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Lone Star Murder Mysteries’ comedy shows are loosely based on historically accurate characters that lived and worked in Fort Worth back in the 1800’s. The production for this private show will take place among the dining tables. Audience members can be pulled into the production unexpectedly at any time. Each table will compete against one another to solve the mystery. Come help Marshal Jim Courtright figure out which one of these zany characters murdered ol’ Horace Grimsby.
The cost for the event is $15.00, which includes a BBQ dinner and the show. If you are interested in signing up for this exciting evening (participants must be 55+), you can register at the Southlake Senior Activity Center located at 307 Parkwood Drive. Please Contact (817) 748-8315 if you would like more information.
