Fall registration for programming at the Nature Center is now open, and there are many festive activities to look forward to!

The Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve is a staple of our community for nature lovers, and our Outdoor Recreation Team is always planning fun and educational activities for our residents to make life-long memories. This fall season will see the return of many family-favorite programs, so grab your spot before it’s too late!

Here’s a look at what the Nature Center has in store:

Cross Timbers Nature Club
Outdoor enthusiasts and young naturalists can look forward to this monthly after-school group to learn more about our local wildlife, explore the trails, and become stewards of the land! Our monthly themes include captivating topics such as antlions, lizards, bats, rabbits, and animals in the winter! Learn more today.

Monarch Butterfly Festival
Mark your calendars for September 16 as we celebrate the annual southern migration of the majestic Monarch Butterfly! We will release over 700 Monarch Butterflies into the wild and interact with them first-hand! The event comprises of three one-and-a-half-hour sessions. Each session has the same activities starting at 8:30 AM, 10:15 AM, and 12:00 PM. Grab your spot today!

The fourth-annual Monarch Butterfly Festival is happening on Saturday, September 17, 2022, and you don’t want to miss it. Join us as we release hundreds of Monarch Butterflies into the wild and interact with them first-hand! This community favorite program helps our butterfly friends as they make their epic annual journey into Mexico. Our Nature Center staff is ready to make this an event to remember!

The Monarch Festival is split into three one-and-a-half-hour sessions. Each session has the same activities, including crafts, monarch-related games, snacks, a butterfly house, and more! Please arrive on time for your registered session (8:30 am, 10:15 am, 12:00 pm). Stick around after your session to enjoy the beautiful miles of hiking trails at the Preserve!

Please note that if you are later than 30 minutes to your check-in time, we cannot guarantee a butterfly will still be waiting for you to release.

Registration is required for all participants ages three and up. All ages are welcome! Children ages two and under are free (registration is not required).

The Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve is Southlake’s hidden gem. With over 20 miles of trails and an award-winning pre-school, there’s no better place to enjoy an early morning stroll.

The Nature Center is not only a paradise for our littlest Dragons, however. Our dedicated Nature Center Staff works hard to make the Bob Jones Nature Center an oasis the entire community can enjoy. This month’s free Adult Outdoor Education class is one you don’t want to miss!

Join local naturalist, Dr. Ray Chancellor, for a morning hike on the Preserve trails! With access to more than 700 acres of natural Cross Timbers habitat, exploring the Preserve is one of the best ways to unplug and connect with nature. Dr. Chancellor will focus on the flora and fauna found throughout the BJNCP trails. Get in a peaceful workout while learning something new at the same time!

Participants should remember to bring a water bottle, dress for the weather, and wear suitable shoes for uneven and possibly muddy terrain. Binoculars are a great way to enhance this class but are not required.

You may be familiar with our award-winning Cross Timbers Forest Preschool and legendary Community Hikes, but did you know the Nature Center offers free Outdoor Education classes for adults? Mark your calendars because there are three incredible class options this spring!

Photography Basics: 3/26/22 10:30am-11:30am
Join local photography expert, Bruce Rosenstiel, to learn about wildlife photography! This class will touch on the basics of photographing nature while focusing on pollinators in the garden. Topics will include equipment, the basics of shooting, general tips and tricks, and more! Feel free to bring your camera with you.

Healing Gardens: 4/16/22 1:00pm-2:00pm
During this class with Betsy Marsh, Conservation Education Coordinator for Tarrant Regional Water District, you’ll have an opportunity to walk through the beautiful gardens at BJNCP, learn about specific plants and garden features that can promote health and well-being, and discuss new pathways to health in your own home garden.

BJNCP Garden Tour: 5/14/22 9am-10am
Tarrant and Denton County Master Gardeners work incredibly hard to make the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve (BJNCP) gardens beautiful and beneficial to wildlife. Join head BJNCP Master Gardener, Carol Dowd, for a tour of the Nature Center gardens. Carol is an expert in all things gardening and can teach you about our plants and give you tips for your garden. This class will be entirely outside. Please dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
