Grab your sunscreen and hiking boots for the Earth Day Community Hike!

The Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve is celebrating Earth Day early this year by inviting all nature enthusiasts to join us on an Earth Day Community Hike on Saturday, April 17 at 10 am. Earth Day is celebrated globally on April 22 in honor of working towards a more sustainable future. What better way to connect with the Earth and the creatures that inhabit it than by spending quality time in nature?

Join us for a morning on the Preserve Trails as we make our way to Grapevine Lake. Led by Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve staff, this Community Hike will be all about the plants and animals who call the Preserve home, how we can help them, and the incredible history of the land.

Learn more about the Jones family who lived on this land and their contributions to the City of Southlake as you explore the winding trails. Be on the lookout for tracks and hints of the diverse wildlife that are native to this land. Get in some solid exercise while becoming more knowledgeable about this treasured Southlake spot.

The Earth Day Community Hike is suitable for guests of all ages and hiking levels. Be sure to bring a water bottle, comfortable clothes you can get dirty, and closed-toe shoes. The hike to Grapevine Lake is two miles, and there will be frequent stops.

Registration ends on Thursday, April 14. Don't delay; register today!

Champions Club was busy last week as 30 campers took over for this year’s Spring Break Camp Mania.

Camp Mania had another successful year of fun, smiles, and laughter. School was out for the week, but that didn’t stop these campers from learning and playing with friends. Campers enjoyed a trip to Bicentennial Park, a dodgeball competition, and a swim day at Champions Club's state-of-the-art Aquatics Center.

Champions Club provided the ideal background for the ultimate Spring Break Camp experience. Equipped with a large classroom, an indoor turf field, an Aquatics Center, and proximity to Bicentennial Park, campers had plenty of opportunities to let their imaginations run wild.

Activities at the Aquatics Center consisted of riding water slides, relaxing on the lazy river, and playing with pool toys provided by the Aquatics Coordinator and Supervisor. Park activities at the Playground included a zipline, slides, and monkey bars. Other highlights were a movie day, freeze dance and tag, and a joke-telling competition between staff members judged by the campers. The weather was beautiful all week long, and every day was a new adventure packed with great activities.

Camp Mania is truly a staple of the Southlake Community Services Department. Getting better and better every year, this year we welcomed new faces and familiar friends. Those who have experienced Camp Mania before will attest that it is always an enjoyable experience.

When asked about her experience planning Camp Mania, Gretchen Morgan, programs coordinator, stated that “Camp Mania has always been a fun and exciting experience for kids. Seeing their smiles at the end of each day lets us know that we have done our job. Of course, pulling off such an incredible camp experience for the Southlake community would not have been possible without the hard work of our dedicated camp counselors and full-time staff.”

Spring Break may be over; however, summer is just around the corner! Keep an eye on our website to register for Camp Mania during the summer. It's an experience you don’t want to miss!

Spring Athletics is in full swing at the Community Services Department, and the competition is heating up!

Athletic programs are a staple of any good Parks and Recreation department, and ours is no exception. Every season, Southlake residents can sign up for a myriad of leagues, classes, and camps to compete, play and perfect their favorite sport. From America’s pastime, basketball, flag football, to volleyball and everything in between, Southlake has it all!

This season, the Athletics Division is upping their game with the Girls’ Volleyball League and Youth Flag Football League. With these two programs growing more than ever, now is the perfect time to work on your athletic mastery. The Girls’ Volleyball League is open to ages 6-12 years old. Youth Flag Football has a league for each grade level from Kindergarten to 8th grade. The growth and success of these programs are indicative of the value our community places on youth sports.

Everyone knows that playing sports is fun, but there are multiple benefits associated with youth athletics. Playing sports improves physical, mental, social, and emotional development in children. For example, playing on a team helps kids learn crucial social skills like teamwork, leadership, and communication. Practicing and seeing visible improvements helps children develop healthy self-esteem and gain confidence while having a blast!

Not only does participating in youth athletics help kids today, but it also sets them up for success in the future. According to Aspen Project Play, physical activity during early childhood can have lasting positive effects throughout adulthood. For example, active children can score up to 40% on tests, are 15% more likely to go to college, and have lower levels of depression and self- derogation.

As adults, active children have 7-8% higher annual earnings, are more productive at work, and have a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. The individual benefits transfer to communities as well. Active communities tend to have higher property values, lower heart disease rates, and higher graduation rates.

There’s no denying that athletics plays a vital role in youth development and the building of healthy and strong communities. We are proud of our robust athletics programming and are looking forward to everything that’s to come. Make sure to keep an eye on our website and register for your favorite sport! Let the games begin!

The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and we are all too cool for school—that’s right, Spring Break is just around the corner!

With the arrival of warmer weather and the exciting prospect of classes being out for a week, also comes the question of what to do with the newfound free time. Luckily for Southlake students and parents, the Community Services Department is offering multiple camp opportunities to keep kids curious and engaged.
