There’s no better place to celebrate life’s most memorable moments than Legends Hall at The Marq. Last Thursday, Legends Hall was on full display for the community during the Legends Hall Dance!

The Legends Hall Dance is an intergenerational community dance hosted by the Southlake Senior Activity Center. Senior Center members and community members aged 21 and over shared a fun night of dancing, refreshments, and world-class entertainment. Friends, family, and couples gathered in the beautiful Traditions Ballroom dance floor as the crowd-favorite Southlake Swing Band played the night away!

Events like the Legends Hall Dance provide the perfect opportunity for community-wide bonding and connection. Our senior members bring the party everywhere they go, and we love celebrating with them! Our world-class Senior Activity Center staff and incredible volunteers from the Young Men’s Service League worked hard to provide an unforgettable night for participants.

“This program started as a seniors-only dance but evolved into an intergenerational event after we invited students from a local dance studio to join us for a performance during the intermission. Our seniors expressed interest in opening the event, and the community responded! We want everyone to know that you don't have to dance to enjoy this fun and wonderful musical event!” stated Soheila Phelps, Senior Services Coordinator.

There’s always something exciting happening at Legends Hall and the Senior Activity Center. Providing world-class programming for our community is what we love to do! Check out the Senior Center Newsletter to stay up to date on all our programs!

The Southlake Senior Activity Center lost one of its oldest and most beloved members on December 25, 2021. Martha Watson Wood passed away last Christmas at the age of 106 years young. “We were really looking forward to celebrating her 107th birthday on our annual Valentine’s Day Luncheon in just two short months,” remarked Soheila Phelps, Southlake Senior Services Coordinator.

Ms. Martha lived a long and very fruitful life and was loved by all who knew her. She was born on February 13, 1915, in Humboldt, Tennessee. She had a sister named Clarissa and grew up in Columbus, Mississippi, where she attended high school. Martha attended college for two years and took Business courses. She primarily worked as a stenographer.

Ms. Martha married Joseph L. Wood in 1938 and lived in Greenville, Mississippi. They had an adopted daughter named Julie Ann. Joseph passed away in 1978, while Julie Ann lived until 2003. Martha's grandson, John, currently lives in Farmington, Arkansas.

A long-time resident, Martha moved to Southlake in July of 1993. She and her late sister lived in a house on her nephew’s property.

Martha was a well-rounded person. Her hobbies included playing the piano, reading, cooking, and visiting the Senior Center. Ms. Martha was a vital member of the Southlake Senior Activity Center’s Party Bridge group for many years. She enjoyed Italian food and loved sweets, especially chocolate. She jokingly considered herself a “chocoholic."

Senior Activity Center staff are heartbroken to know that Martha is gone but will lovingly remember her as a positive presence. “Ms. Martha’s loving attitude was contagious. She was a true Southern Lady; very proper and always carrying her note writings and gifts she used to call ‘the Little Happies.’ She will be deeply missed, and it was such a privilege to know her,” Soheila Phelps included.

Today, we honor her legacy and the lessons she taught our staff and her fellow Senior Center members. Her philosophy of life was to live a simple Christian life with unselfish love and care for others.

Rest in Peace, Ms. Martha. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her loving family and friends.

It’s a brand-new year full of brand-new world-class experiences at the Senior Activity Center!

Dallas Holocaust Museum: Friday, January 28 from 10:00 AM- 3:30 PM

All museum guests must wear face masks for the duration of their visit, and groups are asked to social distance at least six feet apart from anyone not in their group while inside.

Registration for this outing is $14.00. Members must bring additional money for lunch at Corner Bakery. Register here.

We hope you will join us on one or both of these trips. We are excited to bring back field trips as we continue creating life-long memories for our members. A huge thank you to The Southlake Senior Funding, Inc. for partially funding these excursions.

Look out for more outings in the coming months!

It’s been business as usual at the Southlake Senior Activity Center until a rare and valuable painting disappears! Just like that, what begins as an innocent party will become a race to uncover the mystery of the missing art.

The Senior Activity Center is constantly innovating exciting programs for its members, and this event is no exception. In collaboration with the Southlake Public Library, Senior Center members will be immersed in a Murder Mystery Theatre Luncheon on Thursday, December 9 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Brush off your deductive reasoning skills and channel your inner Sherlock Holmes as key clues reveal the guilty party one piece of evidence at a time.

Senior Center participants will be treated to a catered lunch as they solve this thrilling “who done it?” The Senior Activity Center will transform into a lavish theatrical setting for this game of wits. Murder Mystery Parties are a great way to let members’ imaginations run wild, sharpen critical thinking skills, and create life-long memories. We know our members love to have fun, which is why we enjoy coming up with creative programs for our community.

Senior center members can expect an afternoon of twists, turns, and unexpected surprises. Who will be the first to crack this case? Register today. Registration closes on Monday, December 6.

Albert Einstein once said that “wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.”

Members of the Southlake Senior Activity Center would agree that learning is a lifelong pursuit. Summer has flown by, and this month Southlake Dragons are not the only ones hitting the books. The Senior Activity Center is hosting two educational seminars in August for our senior members. It’s never too late to learn something new or rediscover a favorite topic.

American History Seminar
History aficionados are in for a special treat on Thursday, August 12. Educators from Tarrant County College will be at the Senior Center from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm to present a condensed version of their American History lecture. Senior Center members will have the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation.

Technology 101 by Dragons for Seniors
Nothing is better than inter-generational collaboration. Dragons for Seniors students arrive at the Senior Activity Center to answer technology questions on Friday, August 13 from 10:00 am- 12:00 pm. Seniors are encouraged to register for a 30-minute slot and bring any device they would like to learn how to use.

Learn Then Lunch: Legal Seminar
If Law is more your style, then make sure to register for the Seniors Legal Seminar on August 17. Members of the McGee Law Firm will join our Seniors to present the 8 Costly Mistakes Families Make In Their Estate Plans from 11:00 am- 12:00 pm. This seminar will give you a complete picture of estate planning if you are interested in brushing up your knowledge of wills, trusts, probate, and more.

Learning never stops just because you are no longer in school. Senior Activity Center members know just how important it is to keep broadening their horizons, and the SAC is happy to provide our members with educational opportunities to continue their lifelong learning journey.

Calling all recreation enthusiasts, go-getters, and civic-minded residents: The Marq Southlake is looking for volunteers this summer!

Summertime is here, and there are plenty of ways to get involved at The Marq Southlake. If you are looking to bolster your resume and learn life-long skills, register to become a Marq Volunteer.

The Marq utilizes volunteers in a variety of different roles in our mission to create life-long memories. Volunteers can serve at Champions Club and the Senior Activity Center by facilitating everyday operations and aiding with programs and events. Whether you are monitoring the Indoor Playground at Champions Club or helping at the Senior Activity Center, there is a position for you!

Volunteers are vital to our success at The Marq. Your time and dedication help us deliver world-class service to our members and allows us to remain the premier recreation destination in Southlake. While volunteers are an immense help to us, volunteering is also beneficial for you.

Volunteering is a resume booster and a fabulous way to learn new skills, but did you know that the benefits to your well-being go well beyond that? Volunteering builds a greater connection to your community and helps to make new friends and contacts. Volunteering can also combat stress and increase happiness and self-confidence. Knowing that you are helping others gives you a sense of purpose and achievement.

How to Volunteer:
New volunteers must submit a Volunteer Southlake Application and complete either a parental consent form (minors under 17) or a background check (adults 17 and older).

Once you have completed your Volunteer Southlake Application, you will receive an email from Community Services with a Virtual Orientation Video and a link to a Virtual Orientation Questionnaire. You must watch our Orientation video and fill out the questionnaire. When we receive your answers, you will be granted access to self-schedule your first volunteer shift through VicNet.

If you are already in Volunteer Southlake but never volunteered at Champions Club or the Senior Activity Center before, contact Milenka Lopez and state your interest in volunteering at The Marq. You will receive an email from Community Services with your Virtual Orientation Materials. Once you watch the video and fill out the questionnaire, you will be granted access to self-schedule through VicNet.

Former Senior Activity Center Volunteers must go through the Virtual Orientation to sign up for new Senior Center positions.

If you have already attended The Marq Volunteer Orientation for Champions Club, log in to VicNet to schedule your first shift!
