The Southlake Senior Activity Center won first place in the Community Development category for the 2020 National Institute of Senior Centers Programs of Excellence with the September Senior Activity Center Parade from the National Institute of Senior Centers.

Research shows that today’s generations are divided emotionally, physically, and socially with limited learning opportunities and meaningful interactions. The Southlake Senior Activity Center constantly works to bridge the gap between seniors, the younger generations, and our community by providing innovative special events and programs. Over the past year, the Senior Activity Center continued to provide these essential services amid a physical closure due to the pandemic.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) is honoring the outstanding work of senior centers during the pandemic with the 2021 Programs of Excellence Awards. The Southlake Senior Activity Center is one of the 15 programs receiving recognition for innovative, creative, and replicable programs for adults.

The Senior Activity Center won first place in the Community Development category for the September Senior Activity Center Parade. The incredible parade was a city-wide effort that brought city leaders, community members, volunteers of all ages, and various departments together to celebrate seniors during National Senior Center Month. Seniors drove through the Senior Center parking lot while greeted by city staff and volunteers holding hand-made signs, wearing costumes, silly hats, and happy faces. Southlake seniors received close to 150 prepacked hot meals that day.

A national committee of senior center professionals chooses the Programs of Excellence recipients each year. This year, awards were given in eight categories:

  • Community Development, Leadership, and Intergenerational
  • Cultural
  • Fundraising
  • Health and Wellness
  • Nutrition
  • Technology
  • Virtual Innovations
  • Social Isolation

“To be recognized nationally by the prestigious NCOA / NISC in the field of aging adults and senior centers is tremendously rewarding. The challenges brought by the pandemic in the last year made us more aware of the value and importance we have in the lives of our senior community. Programming, outreach, and providing opportunities for connection are ways the Senior Center serves the Southlake community. To have the privilege of serving our senior community is an honor beyond what words could express,” Soheila Phelps, Senior Cervices Coordinator.

Nothing says Fiesta like an outdoor celebration featuring delicious comida, contagious musica, and great conversation with life-long amigos.

The Southlake Senior Activity Center celebrated Cinco De Mayo with an outdoor luncheon on the Senior Center Patio and Aria Amphitheater on Wednesday, May 5. The first major in-person celebration after opening its doors for Phase 1 on Monday, the noon fiesta was a smash hit with Senior Center members.

The Senior Center Patio was vibrant in colorful decorations featuring well-known Mexican symbols such as cacti, piñatas, and sombreros. Senior Center members were ready to pull up a chair in the shady spots of the beautiful patio or enjoy the sunlight shining on the Aria Amphitheater lawn. Salsa music played as the aroma of Fajita Pete’s fajitas filled the air. With over 40 members in attendance, it was clear that Southlake seniors are ready to socialize and enjoy a great meal with fantastic weather.

Cinco de Mayo is a popular celebration with the Mexican-American community in the United States. While commonly believed to be Mexican Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Battle of Puebla of 1862, where the Mexican army successfully fended off a French invasion. Today, the holiday provides another reason to celebrate within our community and welcome back our seniors to the Senior Activity Center.

Holiday-themed luncheons are a staple of the Senior Center. Our staff and volunteers work diligently every day to provide our senior community with ample opportunity to gather safely and have a great time. Cinco de Mayo provided the perfect occasion to transition from our curb-side holiday luncheons to an outdoor event in our world-class facility. We thank everyone who was able to join us.

The Senior Activity Center hosted another fun outdoor event for Southlake’s seniors.

The Senior Center has been hard at work developing engaging and safe programs for Southlake’s seniors. Now that the weather is warmer, the focus of senior programming has shifted to outdoor events. This Friday, seniors were in for a treat with an outdoor Tai Chi class hosted in the Aria Amphitheater outside Legends Hall at The Marq Southlake. Rain or shine, our seniors were ready to get in the action!

Tai Chi is a popular exercise focused on breathing and slow movements. Its emphasis on core, balance, and breathing makes it an excellent practice to reduce stress, improve sleep, and strengthen balance. Our seniors had a great time getting outside and learning from our Senior Volunteer members.

The Senior Activity Center is committed to providing the Southlake community with world-class outdoor programming throughout Spring and Summer. Our Outside Series includes Tai Chi, Zumba, and social opportunities such as the Senior Walking Club. We love empowering our seniors to take ownership of the programs they want to see in Southlake. Whether it’s a curbside lunch pickup or outdoor entertainment, creating life-long memories is our goal.

If you enjoyed this program, make sure to keep an eye on the Senior Activity Center website for more fun outdoor programs!

Winter weather did not stop the Southlake Women’s Club from spreading the love at the Senior Activity Center last Friday during the annual Senior Valentine Luncheon.

The beloved community event finally came to fruition on February 26, after being postponed due to weather concerns. A large turnout of around 80 seniors showed up in front of Legends Hall at The Marq Southlake for the Luncheon. The Southlake Women’s Club provided a wonderful afternoon complete with goody bags, roses, and a catered meal for our seniors to celebrate the month of love.

The Luncheon looked a little different this year, adapting to a curbside pick-up model due to COVID-19 restrictions.  However, that didn’t stop our wonder women from delighting Southlake seniors with Valentine’s surprises. Seniors rolled up sporting pink and red to pick-up a warm meal provided by Fajita Pete’s Mexican restaurant. Fan-favorite love songs played, bubbles filled the air, and volunteers cheered on the streets with signs as seniors pulled up to receive their treats. Southlake Women’s Club members alongside Senior Center staff were even spotted dancing to the “Cupid Shuffle.”

Seniors were all smiles as they collected their warm meals.

“This always makes my day," one senior stated as he received a yellow rose.

“I always look forward to the events at the Senior Center,” claimed another Senior Center member.

The annual Senior Center Valentine Luncheon is one of the Southlake Women’s Club’s signature events. Dating back to the early 2000s, the first Valentine Luncheon took place at the old Southlake Senior Center before moving to the Senior Activity Center at The Marq. Since then, the event has only grown in popularity, with festivities and community spirit increasing every year. With so much love to go around, it's easy to see why this event is a highlight of the year for Southlake seniors.

Partnerships like the one between the Southlake Women’s Club and the Senior Activity Center give our residents world-class experiences. Coming together to celebrate Southlake's giving spirit through events like the Valentine Luncheon creates life-long memories for our residents and staff.

September is National Senior Center Month and the Southlake Senior Activity Center has a variety of programs to offer active adults 55 years and older despite being closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

With the social isolation experienced by most seniors during this pandemic, the Southlake Senior Activity Center’s staff have worked diligently to stay connected with members and seniors in the community. “Our approach is a bit outside the box, but our goal is to keep our seniors engaged and motivated by offering programs that can keep their body and soul active despite social restrictions,” says Soheila Phelps, Senior Services Coordinator. "This month, more than ever, we want to showcase our center and its vital role in our community by offering programs and events that seniors can safely enjoy."

Since April of this year, the Senior Activity Center has continued to make wellness checks, birthday phone calls, connections with volunteers, virtual programming, and create safe opportunities for seniors to engage with each other. National Senior Center Month is being celebrated with a focus on programs that connect to the mind, body, spirit, and Community.
