This isn’t your grandmother’s book club. It's not a book club at all!

The Southlake Senior Activity Center strives to provide world-class and engaging programs for its members. The special event, "It’s Not a Book Club,” is no exception! Senior Center members, register for an entertaining book performance by Ms. Janice Byrd held on Tuesday, March 28 at 1:00 PM at the Southlake Senior Center. Don’t worry, no reading is required, and you won’t be quizzed on the material!

Join us as Ms. Janice Byrd incorporates humor and romance in her dramatization of the book, Surviving Savannah by Patti Callahan. Ms. Byrd is a true Renaissance woman and a lifetime learner whose interests include the arts, historical associations, youth programs, interpreting for the deaf, and oral book performances. She has been a book performer for over thirty years!

Surviving Savannah tells the story of history professor Everly Winthrop, tasked with curating a new museum collection based on artifacts recovered from a shipwreck that occurred in 1838. Will she solve the mystery surrounding the tragic sinking, known as the “Titanic of the South?" What powerful stories will she uncover along the way?

You don’t want to miss out on this performance! Registration is required, and the admission fee is $5.00. As always, the Senior Center will provide light refreshments for our event participants.

The Southlake Senior Activity Center is here to help our members celebrate holidays big and small!

Our staff knows that any holiday is an excuse to gather and eat good food, and National Chili Day is no exception! The Senior Center invites its members to join us on Thursday, February 23, at 11:30 AM for an afternoon of crowd-pleasing chili!

In preparation for this social celebration, our staff did a bit of research to figure out why chili is such a home-run dish. What we found out was that chili has a fascinating history. We know from historians, and allrecipes.com, that chile peppers have been farmed in the Americas for approximately 10,000 years. The use of red peppers gives the dish its signature color.

While the origins of chili are obscure, it’s well-known that people in Texas have been making variations of this dish for centuries. Whether it was Mexican cowboys along cattle trails, gold-seeking pioneers, or San Antonio women in the Military Plaza, Texans have always loved chili! So much so that chili became the official state dish of Texas in 1977!

Don’t miss your chance to enjoy this gem of Texan cuisine with friends. In true Southlake fashion, the event will consist of a Chili Cook Off where the best-of-the-best will win a fabulous prize! Pull out your super-secret family recipes and get ready to compete and eat to your heart’s content! You bring the chili, and the Senior Center will provide the toppings and refreshments.

The Southlake Senior Activity Center is the place to be for world-class senior services. Not only do we work hard to build a unique community for those 55 and better, but we also want our members to feel connected to the larger community.

This month, we are kicking off a brand-new program, Seniors Coffee and Conversation! Join us at the Senior Activity Center for coffee and conversations with special representatives from the City of Southlake’s Safety Departments.

This monthly program gives the senior community time to ask questions, get to know, and enjoy a casual conversation with Southlake’s Safety staff. This program aims to build a bridge between our safety departments and senior residents to give them the resources they need. In addition, this program aims to help residents feel comfortable with our uniformed staff and make our great City safer overall! It’s also a fantastic opportunity for senior residents to learn about the services offered in Southlake!

The first Coffee and Conversation of the summer is on Tuesday, July 12, from 9:30-10:30 AM at the Senior Center. Representatives from the Fire Department will be available to share a morning cup of Joe! This is a free program, and pre-registration is not required!

Coffee and Conversation will rotate monthly with a new department sending representatives to chat with our seniors. In the next few months, we will also meet with the Police Department and Emergency Management!

September is National Senior Center Month, and the Southlake Activity Center is ready to celebrate our 55 and better community! National Senior Center Month provides an opportunity to showcase senior centers and promote a positive image of aging. This year is a time of reflection and of looking forward, always staying mindful of the present. To start the celebrations, the Senior Center is introducing “Thursdays in Memory Lane.”

Thursdays in Memory Lane will be held each Thursday from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm at the Senior Center. Drinks, snacks, and fun surprises will be available! Travel through time as we explore the themes of the GI Generation, The Silent Generation, The Baby Boomers, Generation X, and the turn of the Millennium. Each week features a new 20-year time span.
