Ridesharing has become as commonplace in our modern culture as Tik Tok challenges. Taking advantage of unused resources like the extra seats in your car to turn a profit converted various startups into multi-million-dollar companies. Call A Ride of Southlake (CARS) also relies exclusively on ridesharing to provide reliable transportation to older and disabled adults, except it does it for free!

The City of Southlake is blessed to partner with various nonprofit organizations to enhance the premier services provided to our residents. A world-class organization, CARS provides transportation services for senior citizens and disabled Southlake adults within a 25- mile radius. Founded in 2000, CARS and its incredible network of volunteer drivers ensure those who cannot drive themselves have access to medical, dental, social, business, and personal services.

CARS volunteers have provided over 400 one-way trips to more than 525 registered clients this year. While their efforts are extraordinary, they need more volunteers to continue providing these vital services to our community. Increasing their arsenal of volunteer drivers is more important than ever as seniors become more and more comfortable leaving their homes after the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is a volunteer opportunity for you if you love to drive and are looking for an impactful way to give back to your community. Help give our 55 and better community their autonomy back and become a volunteer driver!

For more information about becoming a CARS volunteer, visit www.callaridesouthlake.org.

Our Senior Activity Center members’ interests are diverse—that’s why our Senior Services Team works hard to provide programs across various disciplines.

Senior Center members find community with like-minded individuals through our clubs and special programs. There’s something for everyone at the Southlake Senior Activity Center, from Mah Jongg, Poker, and Bridge to knitting, flower arranging, and painting!

There's no denying that our members love the arts. Our Intermediate and Advanced Art Classes are among our most popular programs! Our members are always ready to share their artistic talents with the 55 and better community. We love displaying their creations and admiring their visions. Whether someone has always dreamt of picking up a paintbrush or has years of prior art experience, our Art Classes consistently fill up! Nothing is more fun than creating art with friends.

For those who prefer to admire art rather than make it, mark your calendars for the Senior Center Art Show on Wednesday, September 7, at 10:30 AM. Members will showcase their artistic talent in a variety of media. You may even be able to pick up an original!

Our members have so much to offer, and we are thankful that they choose to share their talents with us!

The Southlake Senior Activity Center is the place to be for world-class senior services. Not only do we work hard to build a unique community for those 55 and better, but we also want our members to feel connected to the larger community.

This month, we are kicking off a brand-new program, Seniors Coffee and Conversation! Join us at the Senior Activity Center for coffee and conversations with special representatives from the City of Southlake’s Safety Departments.

This monthly program gives the senior community time to ask questions, get to know, and enjoy a casual conversation with Southlake’s Safety staff. This program aims to build a bridge between our safety departments and senior residents to give them the resources they need. In addition, this program aims to help residents feel comfortable with our uniformed staff and make our great City safer overall! It’s also a fantastic opportunity for senior residents to learn about the services offered in Southlake!

The first Coffee and Conversation of the summer is on Tuesday, July 12, from 9:30-10:30 AM at the Senior Center. Representatives from the Fire Department will be available to share a morning cup of Joe! This is a free program, and pre-registration is not required!

Coffee and Conversation will rotate monthly with a new department sending representatives to chat with our seniors. In the next few months, we will also meet with the Police Department and Emergency Management!

See you next week!

The world-class staff that manages the award-winning Southlake Senior Activity Center are no strangers to commitment to excellence!

No one exhibits passion and dedication to our 55 and better community more than Senior Services Coordinator Soheila Phelps. Soheila leads the Senior Services team and is the brains behind the incredible programming offered to our members. Compassionate, kind, and creative, Soheila is taking her leadership skills to the next level as the most recently appointed Chairperson of the Leisure and Aging branch of the Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS).

Soheila officially took over this position at the TRAPS 2022 Institute and Expo in College Station last week. While there, she also had the honor of accepting the 2022 Lonestar Recreation Programming Class IV Award on behalf of the Southlake Senior Activity Center.

The goal of the Leisure and Aging branch is to enhance the offerings senior centers provide to aging communities throughout the state. The unexpected closure of various senior centers due to COVID transformed the regional Leisure and Aging branch into a state-wide group. The governing body of this organization consists of the Chairperson/ President, Vice-Chair/ President-Elect, and five representatives from each TRAPS region who oversee the different subcommittees. These individuals represent the interests of senior communities throughout the state. They also focus on innovating engaging programming to ensure our senior centers remain a valuable resource to our residents.

Soheila elevates the Southlake Senior Activity Center with her empathetic nature and servant-leadership and will do the same as the Chairperson of the TRAPS Leisure and Aging branch.

“I am looking forward to this challenge, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to give a louder voice to our seniors and aging community within TRAPS,” exclaimed Soheila.

Congratulations on this next step of your leadership journey, Soheila! You make Southlake proud, and we can’t wait to hear of the outstanding things you’ll continue to accomplish!
