Administration is not the first word that comes to mind when thinking about a Parks and Recreation department, but it's crucial in providing world-class community services to our residents. Community Relations goes hand-in-hand with Community Services, and this team handles everything from marketing and communications to community events!

There’s more than meets the eye regarding the Community Services Admin and Community Relations Divisions. The Admin team oversees the administration of Southlake’s biggest department. Led by the Community Services Director, the Admin Division is the primary liaison between our department, other departments, City leadership, and various citizen boards and commissions. People on this team include the Director of Community Services, Deputy Director of Community Services, Assistant to the Director, and Administrative Assistant. The Community Relations Division comprises the Community Relations Manager and the Marketing and Communications Coordinator. These two teams may seem small, but they provide a plethora of services to our community.

Let’s take a look at some of the things these teams do on a day-to-day basis.

Comprehensive Planning and Capital Improvement Projects: The Admin team oversees implementing Comprehensive Plan recommendations, which often turn into Capital Improvement Projects. The comprehensive plans serve as a strategic roadmap to where we want to be as a community. For our department, that includes implementing suggestions from the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan, the Public Arts Master Plan, and the Youth Master Plan, among others. Recent examples of master planning at work include Phase III of Bicentennial Park Improvement and the upcoming Pickleball Complex.

Boards and Commissions and Agenda Management: The Community Services Department serves seven citizen boards and commissions such as the Southlake City Council, the Parks and Recreation Board, the Southlake Arts Council, The Southlake Parks Development Corporation, the Southlake Youth Action Commission, the Senior Advisory Commission, and the Community Enhancement and Development Corporation. Service to these boards and commissions includes providing staff liaisons to each board, agenda management, and public record maintenance and retention.

Organizational Culture: The Administration Division works to create a positive departmental culture. This means managing strategic elements, such as onboarding processes, employee engagement and retention, succession planning, world-class customer service, championing innovation, departmental safety, and professional development.

Marketing and Communications: The Community Relations Division manages all departmental marketing and communications initiatives. Important work like website administration, social media management, media relations, crisis communications, marketing campaigns, and graphic design for the department are managed by this mighty team. This Division ensures we have clear, strong, and transparent communication for our external and internal partners.

Community Relations: As the name suggests, the Community Relations Division is also in charge of community building on behalf of the department. This team facilitates community events, manages the Public Arts Program, and works with our Community Services Agreements partners to provide world-class services to our residents.

This is just a short snapshot of what these Parks and Recreation professionals do to serve the City of Southlake. You may not always see them, but you can be sure they rise up for Parks and Recreation daily!

The City of Southlake officially celebrated Employee Appreciation Week last week, and several Community Services employees received awards.

Every year the City honors several outstanding employees that go above and beyond to provide world-class customer service to our residents. These employees are chosen based on their commitment to the City’s values. The Champions Club Membership Experience Team received the Accountability Values Award this year!

Champions Club members know that the Membership Experience Team is there for them every step of the way. This team embodies accountability and excellence in their field, from setting up facility tours, starting memberships, communicating efficiently, and planning engaging member appreciation events. Guest Services Supervisor Erika Bashaw, Membership Services Coordinator Marianne Burton, and Community Relations Coordinator Dana Blankenship make up this dream team. Together, they work hard to ensure Champions Club members have a world-class experience every time they visit.

Erika, Marianne, and Dana “take personal responsibility and interest in the customer-first,” stated Community Services Director Chris Tribble. “This team respectfully challenges each other to do better, to work hard. They push all the different angles of communication to make magic happen. They have fun and truly enjoy all their work, and our members feel it, and not only that, but our team sees it. This team is dedicated, fun, and inspired. What they do permeates throughout our department. They all have a very bright future here in this organization, and I wish them nothing but continuous success.”

Congratulations to Erika, Marianne, and Dana for being recognized for your hard work! We are so glad to have you on the team!

It’s a brand-new year full of brand-new world-class experiences at the Senior Activity Center!

Southlake Senior Activity Center members are in for a treat this month. Field trips are back, and the Senior Center staff have been busy planning exciting and educational excursions for January. We have two opportunities to visit Dallas museums together this month because we know our members are adamant life-long learners!

Dallas Museum of Art: Wednesday, January 19 from 10:00 AM- 3:30 PM

Senior Center staff invites members to join them for an afternoon of art appreciation. This downtown Dallas staple boasts a collection of more than 24,000 objects dating from the third millennium BC to the present day! We will also be attending the Van Gogh and the Olive Groves exhibit.

Registration for this outing is $15.00. Members must bring additional money for lunch. Register here.

Dallas Holocaust Museum: Friday, January 28 from 10:00 AM- 3:30 PM

The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum tells the story of the Holocaust, the emergence of international human rights following the war, and the development of human and civil rights in America. Join us as we explore this critical moment in human history.

All museum guests must wear face masks for the duration of their visit, and groups are asked to social distance at least six feet apart from anyone not in their group while inside.

Registration for this outing is $14.00. Members must bring additional money for lunch at Corner Bakery. Register here.

We hope you will join us on one or both of these trips. We are excited to bring back field trips as we continue creating life-long memories for our members. A huge thank you to The Southlake Senior Funding, Inc. for partially funding these excursions.

Look out for more outings in the coming months!

The year is wrapping up, but there is still plenty of fun to be had at the Senior Activity Center.

Our incredible Senior Center staff had world-class programs planned for our members this December to wring in the Holiday season. Following on the heels of the thrilling Murder Mystery Luncheon, our senior members visited the Dallas Arboretum on Tuesday, December 14. Members got into the holiday spirit and explored the 66 acres of beautiful grounds, elaborately decorated Victorian-style gazebos, and colorful Christmas village. This sold-out event was a hit with our members, and we are excited to continue planning exciting excursions in the new year.

In addition, the Senior Activity Center is hosting its annual Holiday Party today, December 17 from 1:30-3:00 PM to continue the holiday theme! Members are encouraged to bring their holiday cheer and sweet tooth as there will be a coffee bar, desserts, and a white elephant gift exchange. There is a $10 minimum for an unused and prewrapped gift for each participant for the gift exchange.

We can’t wait to continue the seasonal festivities at the Senior Activity Center. This is a spectacular time of year, and we love coming up with fun ways to celebrate with our members and staff!
