May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This nationally recognized celebration pays tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history and are instrumental in its future success. The Southlake Public Library will honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a special display and free take-home kits. The Library will also host other fun activities for the month of May. Youth Kits May 3 Southlake Sister Cities Origami Kits for Kids Pick up this fun kit and learn a little more about Southlake Sister Cities, while supplies last. May 10 Salt Crystal Garden Kit for Kids This kit includes Epsom salt, food coloring and instructions to grow your own salt crystal garden. Pick up your kit, while supplies last. May 17 Roll & Dot Math Kit for Preschoolers Help your little ones develop their math abilities early. This kit is a fun way to work on early math skills. The kit includes a large dye, stickers and a numbered counting sheet. Pick up your kit, while supplies last. May 18 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. Origami in Motion! Join magician and storyteller Yasu Ishida on a magical journey of origami, a paper-folding art! Learn how to make amusing action origami which animates to fly, flip, jump and snap. This hands-on workshop focuses on folding 3-4 action origami designs, such as traditional flapping bird, jumping frog and even wiggling dinosaur. Registration required, best for ages 8 and up. Adult & Teen Kit May 10 Leather Loop Keychain Kit Bring home a take-home kit for adults and teens, while supplies last. This kit features a leather keychain that can be customized with embroidery floss. May 14 at 6:30 p.m. Meet Texas Author and Artist Deborah Paris – Zoom Event Deborah Paris is an American landscape painter. Her moody, tonal paintings reflect an intense, intuitive connection to the natural world and its rhythms. Based on a foundation of intense and close observation, drawing, memory and imagination, and indirect painting techniques, she produces luminous works full of mystery and mood. Her new book, Painting the Woods, published by Texas A&M Press in November 2020, explores the experience of and her creative process as a landscape painter. Narrative passages interweave with observations about the natural history of Lennox Woods, its flora and fauna, art history, the science of memory, Transcendentalist philosophy, the role of metaphor in creative work, and even loop quantum gravity theory. At this event the author will talk about her new book and share her experiences as an author, artist and naturalist.
